Ignition module for 5.0 OMC Cobra goes bad after dealer installed new starter

Hi, I have a "new to me" 1992 Four Winns Horizon 200 with a 5.0 OMC I/O. The motor ran great but the starter didn't disengage right away after starting so I took it to a local marina to have a new starter put in as well as to have the trim gauge repaired/replaced and to have a new bilge pump put in. Like I said the thing ran great when I brought it in. I got it back yesterday and tried to run it but it would not get up on plane and would not go above 2k rpm. When i put it in neutral it did rev higher. I took it back to dealer and now they are telling me the ignition module is bad. My questions are:

Do these ignition modules just go bad?

Could the mechanic have somehow damage the ignition module when installing the new starter?

I just find it very coincidental that it ran great before I brought it in and now it has this problem. I don't want to pay for a repair that was caused by dealer.

Thank you.

Howdy,

Welcome aboard

They usually don't just "go bad" (notice I said "usually)

But they do go bad.

The bigger problem is that module is no longer available. The Volvo Penta replacement is 3854077 IGN MODULE V8 GM and it is also listed as "NLA"

You might want to have a look at http://blog,marinepartsexpress,com/?p=868 (copy/paste, replace the commas with dots)

Sorry about that.....

Had the exact same problem on my '88 and it was the anti siphon valve on the gas tank. A failure to pick up rpms, usually is not spark/ignition related IF the ignition system is giving you full advance at the specified rpm and there are not other ignition related problems. That needs to be verified first. I'm not familiar with the later ignition systems on the OMCs having had only old school points, condenser and coil (and how SWEET it is, no NLA parts, everything is available, either OE or after market). I'd see if you can get the spec for how much total advance there should be, get an advance timing light, put the boat in the water, tie it up and run it in NEUTRAL at the specified rpm and check it. If its good then its probably not ignition unless your plugs are worn or wires have high resistance. If its good then you have a fuel problem most likely.
