Hello Dhadley, Bass Cat and all other experts!

I think I have an ignition problem. The engine Evinrude 300XP -88 runs just great for approx 10 minutes. Then it starts to struggle and just can't maintain rpm.

The boat tops about 60 mph @ 5600 rpm using a Raker 22". Boat 24 foot fast day cruiser. But when the problem occurs I cant get it above 5000 rpm (52 mph).

We have changed all ignition coils and cables (and a whole lot of other components). It definetly runs better especially at low rpms, but it seems like it fades out in power when it gets warm. Could it be the stator/timer base that needs replacing? Power pack is brand new, thermostats to.

Thanks in advance.

If the engine runs as it should (top rpm) when it is cold, but loses power once it warms up, the carburetors are okay (they do not come and go).

That problem sounds like the stator which is a two fold component (one being the beginning of the ignition system) is failing (melting down) which would result in a AC voltage drop to the powerpack.

Remove the flywheel and inspect the stator's large black coils. If any of them are cracked and/or melting down a sticky substance on the timer base and block, replace it.

Thanks!

Actually we have found a sticky substance below the fly wheel stator pack, which made us puzzled. But it fits just great with your theory.

We will check it and come back.

Yep, that'd be a good place to start.

BTW -- at 5600 youre using about 200 or so hp. Crank it up!!
