i just bought this boat and haven't yet bought the manual but it's on the way. the motor cranks and runs fine at low rpm's. however as soon as i get to about 2000 rpms the ignition cuts on and off. had it checked by a johnson dealer and confirmed that power to the coils were pulsating.there is no power pack on this engine. and i'm told that usually the stator is done for everything when it go's. any sugestions?? also can't remove flywheel LOL rusted in place from 20 years of salt air and water (got it soaking in pb blaster) any other sugestions?

Hi bogart. You did right by ordering the manual. Go through the basic troubleshooting procedure first. These came with the round stator, and the system with seperate charce/sensor coil you mention. If its running without powerpack, i think you got the only that does !!! The power is the black box on side of cylinderhead.

Are U sure it isnt a fuel problem ?

Your problem reminds mee of one I once had. One of the wires to the kill switch wore through and rattled against ground under the carb. It was totally melted at this piont. It was on my 84 35 HP which is same motor. Made the motor cut out in small splitseconds. Take a look at yours.

Re: ignition problems 1984 30hp johnson

Hi again Bogart

If you have ignition problems on one cyl only, its most likely:

Plug, Plugwire, Coil or powerpack, as chargecoil and censor is common to both. Try to disconnect kill wire, and be sure its insulated from ground from it leaves powerpack. Also check every of your ground connections, Power packs too.
Check to see if the ground wire from timerbase is OK. Ignition failures can be generated from broken wires from timerbase to powerpack too sometimes. Try to wiggle with the wires when it runs, remember these wires changes position when the timer base moves.
Good luck

Does the spark totally disappear, or will it only get intermittant ?

Re: ignition problems 1984 30hp johnson

Spark seems to be affected by rpm anything over 2000 rmp and the spark goes away as soon as the engine slows it starts firing again making the motor act as though a rev limiter were killing the ignition ...... no rev limiter on this motor and 2000 rpm shouldn't be enough to kill it if there were. i'm thinking this is one for the pro's. i'm planing to take it to my jonny/rude dealer tomorow. (fish are biting no time to fool around)
