Have a 50hp 4cly mercury ser. #a131197. Lost spark on cyl 1 & 2. I suspect switchbox and I was wondering if there is a way to verify by switching wires. Mine has green/white and blue to switchbox (but not red/white and red. the lugs are there but the wires never were). Is it safe to switch the grn/wt and blue to see if the problem moves?
Is anyone familiar with this setup?
Thanks, jefa

Re: ignition question

jefa,
first thing i would do is switch the coils for a quick check, if the spark does not switch with them it is a good probablity them switch box is your failure. i had the switch box go out on my 45 and it started by dropping 2 cyls, then after it cooled it would run fine and this would repeat over. i had tried coils, plugs, the mag had been replaced also, it finally quit completly while out in the gulf and it took 3 hours for me to get back. i'll replace it any time i have another ignition problem again(after 3 hours floating in the gulf you'll replace anything)

Re: ignition question

Thanks for the comeback, I'll try the coil swap.
Any idea what's up with this stator, only 2 wires to switchbox?, is that aftermarket?
