have almost everything ready to rock,

i have a aq131A and the resistor wire off the back of the alternator needs to be removed due to i bought a flamethrower 3 ohm coil, and its not getting the proper voltage under load, but when i have the resistor off the boat will not shut off! ive tested everything with the switch... on off works perfectly, but when i have the resistor on it turns off with the switch... take the resistor off and it keeps running with 12 volts at the + coil... bad alternator??? im lost... i even ran a secondary ignition and still does the same thing..

im so close but so far!!!

Re: Ignition Questions, Resistor problems

Hi Bruce!

Points or Pertronix + coil ignition is pretty simple.

If you have a power source to the + side of the coil, the engine will keep running until you shut it off!

You have a wiring error somewhere that is providing power with the key switch off.

Re: Ignition Questions, Resistor problems

well after playing with the system a while,
works with the resistor in line,

dosnt turn off with resistor gone,

but the wire disconnected totally from the D+ on the alternator the ignition key turns the motor off, but dosnt charge... the D+ off the rear of the alternator is the key area, the charging system does not work with the resistor in line unless revved up to 2500+
and works perfect with the wire direct... im stumped... im leaning towards bad alternator... crap!

ok now i guess i need to rewire the system B+ and B- are ok, but where and what to do with the D+??

Re: Ignition Questions, Resistor problems

I don't have my hands on a wiring diagram.......but the addition or deletion of resistor wire or a resistor shouldn't make any difference other than change the (running vs cranking) voltage at the coil.

In just about ALL points ignition systems (with a resistor) the start position of the "key" switch effectively shorts across the resistor or resistor wire to allow full "12v" to the coil for starting.

It's not really 12v because operating the starter usually results in a lower voltage (depending on the condition of the battery)

Re: Ignition Questions, Resistor problems

well i put it all back together stock... and i have 12 volts at the + on the coil, and then with a load grounding the negative on the coil its still at 12 volts... im good i think... i was just told there was a resistor in the line and it had to be removed for the coil to work properly...
