my ignition switch **** the bed and i have another a friend gave me off of his old non-running boat both switches have letters to indicate what wires go where but they are both different. the letters on the broken switch are marked B,M,S,A,M (clockwise, from top ,with letters in normal readable upright position). and the new(ish) switch is marked B,G,S,L,M (once again clockwise with letters in normal upright position, EXCEPT the letter B is at about the 8:00 position and the last letter M is at about the 3:00 position) i could spend all day blowing fuses trying to finger this out so some hepl would as always be much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Re: ignition swap help

(1) - B,M,S,A,M (Old Switch)

(2) - B,G,S,L,M (Replacement Switch)

I assume that the "L" is actually an "I" for ignition. If so, the "G" (ground) in #2 switch would actually be a "M". The "I" (ignition) would actually be an "A" (accessory).

With an ohm meter.... Reading should exist between "B" and A/L/I terminal only when the key is in the ON or START position.

Reading should NOT exist between the "M" and G/M terminal when the key is ON. Reading SHOULD exist netween the "M" and G/M terminal when the key is OFF.

Let us know what you find.

yea joe everything checksout just like you said it should BUT the switch is sorta like a car switch it has an "off, acc, run, and start positions everything is good with it off and on the first position but when it goes to next psition i get no readings all around the board dose this make any kind of difference ?

Re: ignition swap help

When you say "4 positions like a car"....... the 1st position would be accesories such as a car enabling the radio, power windows, etc. The 2nd position would be the OFF position. The 3rd position would be the ON position. The 4th position would be the start position.

If this is what you have, discard it and purchase the proper switch.

Re: ignition swap help

I suggest that you break down and purchase a proper ignition switch. With that crazy glue in your on board tool kit when the switch breaks down due to viberation etc, you may find yourself firmly attached to the gunnel. Patch work is not the way to go in the marine line.
