Re: ignition switch bypass?
If I unhook the wires to the ignition switch and use a jumper to crank my 68 85hp evinrude, will it spark if the ignition switch was keeping it from sparking. Is this a good way to test if the ignition switch is bad?
No. The igniton switch has to feed 12 volts to the ignition amplifier. Disconnect it and you will have no volts to the amplifier and thus no spark. However, you could use a jumper between the Bat and Ign terminals to have the effect of turning it on.
I must warn you: Be awfully careful messing with the electrical system on that motor. It is easy to blow the amplifier and that will cost you $$$$. You should get a factory service manual and follow it. They have them at
www.outboardbooks.com. One problem with the manual is the test procedures use an obsolete neon tester tool. But the rest of it still stands.
Edit: instead of digging into the ignition switch, merely check for voltage at the red wire at amplifier while cranking. Proper voltage there will verify that all the wiring is intact. You'll need a voltmeter (multimeter).
More Edit: The manual will have a wiring diagram so you can figure out the circuitry.
