I bought a 20 foot 1983 Celebrity with a 470 Mercruiser. When I bought the boat it didn't have an ignition switch. There are three wires, orange - purple and yellow. One of the wires looks like it goes to the Carb. and one appears to go to the safety switch on the throttle control. the other goes to the guages.

My question is what switch does this boat use? Does it need the push to choke switch or just a three position switch? I posted this previously under Celebrity Owners Forum.

Thanks,

Push-to-choke switches are used with outboards. I'm not familiar with the carb on the 470. Test the choke wire by applying 12V+ to the wire. If the choke snaps shut, use a push-to-choke switch. But I doubt that's how it operates. If it has a round plastic puck into which that wire goes, it has an automotive-style choke heater, and you would use a standard I/O ignition switch.

I know my answer isn't that helpful, but at least it will bump you question to the top.

Thanks for the info. I will try that in the morning. As you can tell from my question I am learning as I go on this restoration project. But hey I'm retired and I have plenty of time to work on it. Thanks again
