I have a 82 40hp that the wire harness was cut it the ignition switch. All the replacement switches that I have been able to locate have been for 6 wires and I have 8 in the harness. I have a red, black, grey, brown, purple, black/yellow, yellow/red, and yellow/black. Does anybody know where I can find a 8 pin switch or can I get a 6 pin and put two wires on one pin or just not use all the wires. If anybody has any info it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: ignition switch / key

They don't all go to the switch -

Red is battery +

Black is ground

Grey is tach signal

Brown is mercathode ???(brown with white strip is trim sender, tan is temp)

Purple is ignition +

Black/yellow is kill switch

Yellow/black is is choke

Yellow/red is the starting circuit

Re: ignition switch / key

So a 6 pin switch will work and everything but the grey and tan wire go to the switch?

Re: ignition switch / key

Correct.

Also, not all switches have the ground terminal, not all switches have the choke terminal (make sure the switch you buy has the 'push to choke' feature).

I'm going on holidays tomorrow but when i get back I can post a diagram for you. But first, I NEED YOUR SERIAL NUMBER!
