ignition switch need help!

ok 89 force it chokes ,it starts, it just wont choke and start at the same time, if I choke it (push in) and turn the key nothing but if I turn the key with out chokeing it she cranks, so you think it a bad ignition switch? thanks

When you turn the key to the on position, not start position, and push in and out do you hear any clicking? If not, check for voltage at the choke solinoid when pushing in on the switch. If you get voltage, then check the ground on the solinoid. If the ground is good, the solinoid is probably bad.

If you get no voltage, then either the wire is bad or the switch is bad. To check the switch, put your voltmeter black lead on a ground and touch the red to the screw that the choke solinoid wire is attached to. Push the switch in and out and see if you get voltage. You can tell which terminal on the switch to touch by comparing color codes with the wire on the solinoid or looking in your manual.

You do have a manual right?

thanks john , yes I do have a manual the choke works, the engine starts, it just wouldnt start when i was holding the choke button in. It wouldnt crank nothing, I bought a new switch today can someone tell me where the wires go to?I have 6 terminals on switch M S I C M B NOW THE WIRES ARE YELLOW, PURPLE, 2 WHITES, GREEN, BLACK,RED. if someone can even call me I would appreciate it, I have werizon so it should be free verizon to verizon. 609-405-4149. thanks russ

Before rewiring the switch I would verify your battery is good. Your original post was kind of misleading. Correct me if I am wrong on what you say the problem is. If the key is in the run position you can push the key in and hear and see the choke engage. When you turn the key to the start position (This is where it is spring loaded) you can get the starter to spin but not engage the choke? If you push the choke in while in the start position you can not make the starter spin? If this is the case it sounds like you have a bad battery or wiring is dirty, corroded or loose. Do you own a DC volt meter? If so how much voltage do you read across your battery? This needs to be read by a volt meter not a dash guage that reads voltage. Have you had the battery load tested?

the problem was if i push in the choke then turn the key i got nothing. if i just turn the key without pushing in the choke she cranks and starts up. I did verified that the choke is good so i figure it was a bad switch now i just need what color wire goes to what switch terminal since the old switch is diffrent to the new switch.

Generic for chryslers should be the same on force. C is for choke and wire is green, B is for Battery and is red, S is for starter solinoid and is either yellow or yellow /black, Violet is for the tach and does not hook to the switch. The orange is for the heat alarm which also does not connect to the switch. The problem lies on the type of ignition you have. White or blue wires can attach to the I or M depending. Hope a force guy comes by to help. You say two whites and not a white and a blue? If white and blue the blue to the M and the white to the other M.

thanks for the reply eurolarva so far so good the only thing left is 1black 2 whites 1 purple. the letters i have left is..( i and 2m,s ) I put black to the one m both whites to the other m and the purple to i on back of the switch package it said i =ignition solenoid m = magneto& ground. s= start b= battery I have no tach and no blue wire a little more help and i think i will have it.

If you dont get a response soon try google the marine doctor. The two M I believe will short out when the switch is turned off. I dont think the purple is suppose to connect to the swtch then again the ignition is newer then my chrysler.

I had a similar problem with my 85HP Force and realized that I only needed 5 of the 6 wires. One of the wires was connected back to the ground on the engine and grounded out the switch. I'm on the road right now for work but I can reply on Thursday after I've had a chance to climb under the console and tell you exactly how mine is wired.

ok I looked it up in the manual, here goes, grn to c [choke] red to b [battery] orange to I [over heat] yellow to s [start] now heres were it gets a little crazy it shows on both m terminals one white & a blue, but you have two whites & a black, id try putting the two whites together on one m terminal and the black on the other, the white wire shows kill cct from modules and black as ground when you go to shut down the engine theres a switch in the ignition switch that closes shorting the mods to ground and opens on start up removing the ground, hope this helps Don

thanks for the help chitownborn I dont have an orange wire but i do have a purple wire that i put on I i did put the 2 whites together and put that on one m as it was on the old switch that way. I put the red on b for battery and a black on the other m thanks again

imported rusty that purple wire is a tachometer wire off the rectifier if you have it connected to anything on that ignition switch take it off and insulatate it , if you dont have a tach just let it hang. being hooked to the ignition switch could cause damage to rectifier or stator good luck Don

Hi Rusty,
My harness has 8 wires but I'm only using 5 to start and run the engine. The black is disconnected on both ends, the orange goes to the overheat alarm and I don't have a tach so the purple is extra. I got it hook up to the i on the switch i better take it off then, so what wire should i put on the I? the package said i=ignition solenoid.
