Re: ignition switch

That should easily be doable. You have magneto ignition or battery ignition? Does the maxrules website have a wiring diaghram for that motor?

ive been talking to this guy locally thats works on nothin but these old engines and he says it a battery ignition which has only three or so prong on it. the one on my boat has like 6 and he says that if it has an "M" stamped on it its the wrong one. is there a certain part number for the switch that i need to get?

Re: ignition switch

You can shift it with an ordinary SPDT toggle switch, but I'm not going to tell you how to do it. (Safety reasons).

safety do you mean a fire in case the switch burns out or shorts the whole wiring harness? i had that in mind but want definate. as far as the switch i can get one of the 4 prong at advance auto.

Re: ignition switch

For a battery ignition, you would need a simple on/off switch and two push buttons. Flip the switch up to send +12VDC to the ignition coil, and both push buttons. Wire one button to operate the electric choke solenoid and the other to send voltage to the starter solenoid.

Good answer F_R. I agree, especially when it comes to the shifting part on that mtr.

The reason it's a safety issue as you can easily hit the switch from F to R at any speed and really make a mess. You need a switch that can't easily go from one position to the other.

now would it be the same concept of wiring a street stock race car just using a toggle an push button? cause thats what i used to do.

Re: ignition switch

well i just started working on my engine again a couple weeks ago little by little and finally got the gears to go in forward and reverse. the main reason i found out is that the main hot in the harness was not getting any juice through it, so i ran a jumper wire from the ign. switch acc. post straight to the double throw toggle switch i got and works great. (resistance on prop fwd & rvs). so now im gonna check to see if my accual push button still works if yes then i will that again but if not ill use the switch. thanks for all the advice from you guys and ill keep you posted!!
