Trying to determine the compatibility of flywheels for an outboard I am working on. I have a 1992 9.9 and will be replacing the flywheel. In some references I have seen that all years from 74-92 are interchangeable for both the 9.9 and 15. Other places indicate that only 87-92 are interchangeable. Can I for example, take a flywheel from an 84 and have it work with the existing stator on the 92? I'm hope someone has a definitive answer because BRP is of no help whatsoever and my local dealers are not interested in helping me out if I'm not buying the part NEW from them. Does anyone know for certain?

Thanks for that info MCM. Are you saying the physical parts are identical even thought the P/N are different?

Yes, part #'s get what's called superceded over the years. couldn't tell ya exactly why

If you go to that link I gave you, you can locate each motor and cross reference p/n's, it will show the original # in blue and the new # underneath.

EDIT: Apparently there is a difference between the rope start flywheel & the elec. couldn't tell you what though

OK now I see. I have to go to the older model to see the cross reference #'s. Very handy :) Thanks again.

Difference in flywheels is the the teeth for the electric starter. Rope starts only have teeth for the recoil starter and not electric. Electric has both.
