For complete ignition testing you need special equipment. My Mercotronic equipment goes back to 1958 and 1978, so I can't, e.g., test powerpacks for models made after 1978. Most people asking questions on this forum don't own such equipment. For those of you with no special tools, there are still helpful tests that can be made using an Ohm meter. Consider the 6-35 hp OMC motors made 1977-1988, where the ignition system consists of powerpack, coils, charge coil and sensor. One can test the coils, charge coil and sensor using only an Ohm meter (see any part 4 of any Evinrude/Johnson repair manual 1977-1988). You can't test the powerpack, and you can't test coils for leakage under high voltage, but you can eliminate or isolate certain problems via the resistance tests described in detail in the OMC Service Manual. I recommend finding an Evinrude or Johnson service manual for your particular motor on Ebay, I own but don't recommend a Seloc manual. For a 15 hp motor, e.g., a manual for any year in the range 1977-1985 will be generally be adequate for overhauling and repairing your motor. Ignition systems changed in detail for the OMC 15 hp in 1985, but the resistances given in any of the manuals are more or less valid for all year models.
