I am helping my uncle get his 82 Cobalt 228hp mercruser (305 chevy) running again. It is hesitating badly and has no power, we will start with a basic tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, and a fuel filter. Do you have to disconect a spark advance to set the timming? I did not see any vacume advance on the distributor. I am a diesel mechanic by trade, but I have to admit I dont know a lot about the older ignition systems. Thanks in advance!

It has a Thunderbolt IV ignition system. No points, not vacuum advance, all done electronically.
With a bad hesitation, you may need a carb rebuild. Has it been sitting for a while?
You can go to the Adults only sticky at the top of this forums list of posts and download an OEM manual for the engine.

Re: ignition timming

Sorry about that, though it was an 84 for some reason.
The 82's could have the Mallory points type ignition. Mechanical advance, no vacuum advance on marine engine after the 60's.
The manual explains both systems. Should be manual #3 for your engine.
