Ignition wiring w/ push button start

I have a 1972 50hp Evinrude. I am trying to install the push button to start. I ran a wire from the battery to the push button, then froim the push button to the sylinoid. But the sylinoid just trips but wont turn the starter. Can i just bypass the sylinoid and just put a switch from the battery to the starter. I am going to leave my key switch on cause it turns off my motor.

Only if you want to install very heavy gauge wire for the entire length and pay big money for a heavy duty switch that can reliably handle a couple hundred amps.

Sounds like your solenoid might be bad. You have made sure you have a good ground on the starter and all connections are tight.
