I have excessive fuel coming out of the bottom carb when I prime the bulb. I took the bowl out and did a visual inspection of it and the seat they both looked good from what I could tell. When I prime it is when the fuel just runs out the bottom carb and the bulb never seems to get stiff at all. I could pump the whole tank out easily it seems.

I have the engine running good now except it begins to bog down shorlty after running for a while and it begins to get pretty foggy.

I'm guessing now that it has been flooding the bottom two cylinders. Ive installed my tachometer, it is working good, also ran the power tune threw it and the compression is looking good on all. The jb weld fixed the leak on the exhaust cover. I replaced the gear lube and I have good water pressure so even though I bought the impeller kit I haven't used it.

So now should I get a kit for the bottom carb? or does this sound like the bottom fuel pump causing the flooding? I also want to tell you how greatly I appreciate the advise, without the help you have provided this summer may have well turned out different for my girls. Thank-you -Mike B

It's gotta be the carb. The Float is either sunk, or the needle/seat valve is malfuntioning.

-W

Thanks Clam, left you a message on ebay asking for carb kit. Seems like you are the guy to know when it comes to my motor. How would the float sink? Also do I have to use the phantom black paint from Merc to repaint my engine exterior. Do you know how I can get new decals? Thanks.

Went ahead and ordered the float and kit from oldmercs.com.

Re: IL6 1971 1350 Fuel Bottom Carb.

Question:
My system has two fuel pumps. I have kinked the hose coming from the first pump that feeds to the second pump and the primer bulb gets stiff. I have also noticed when I removed the filter from the third carb that they have sequential hoses leading from the top pump into the first carb, then it feeds to second, then to third. Now since I have kinked the hose at the line that feeds the actual second pump and the sequential line feeds the third carb why would it stop the excessive fuel? Why two pumps if the carbs all feed to one another?

Im stumped and confused.

Im thinking it the 2nd pump is the problem. What else could it be?

Hey Opk, dont ya just love the inline and the people on this forum are a great help. I have just carried out a lot of work on my engine both included rebuilding the carbs and the fuel pumps.

To be honest my friend, for what it costs to do the lot and the little time it takes, its worth doing it all!

REVELATION!

With the bottom carb off and allowing the hose to feed the second pump I see the fuel is coming out the inlet not from the carb so the 2nd pump has a ruptured diaphragm.

Thanks again. Yes stant1man it has been worth it but to be really honest Im on a real tight budget. Im lucky I got the engine from my brotherinlaw for $200.

Will it hurt running with 1 fuel pump until I get the diaphragm in the mail?

Yes........... wait. Really.

The Phantom Black works very well. The decals however are unobtainium as of yet.

-W

Do yourself a favor and don't run it until you get that fixed. You don't want to ruin a piston or two.....

Yeah I might already have scored pistons anyway. I bought a new compression checker and will test em when I get the stuff in. Thanks and trust me I wouldn't second guess Clams or Laddies.
