could a ignition off an 80's style il6 115 work on a 78 il6 140? the 140 has a distrubutor and the 115 has the six coils. they have the same diameter flywheel. could i take the whole setup, wires and all and install that on the 140?

I don't believe so. The blocks have different mounting bosses. Pop the flywheels off and take a look. I don't think you could mount the ADI stator on the older distributor block, and that would mean no trigger, etc. Plus all the linkages and arms and such. I never tried myself, but visualizing in my head, I can't imagine it's even remotely possible. Sorry.

Re: il6 merc ignition swap

If you have two complete engines it can be done but it is a lot of work. The intake manifold is different to accomodate the ADI linkage etc, The stator will mount after you change the intake I believe( I have not done it, but I just dissassembled two complete engines with the same thought as you in mind....decided against it). You would also need the backing plate from the ADI system to mount the coils and trigger units on, plus you would have to change the water jacket covers and the throttle arm lever, different adjustment points for idle and timing etc.:%
Not worth the hassle in my opinion, I just rebuilt the best engine, which in my case was the 1975 1150 with distributor.

You don't want to try that type of conversion. If it could be done you would have seen or herd of it here at iboats...

I've been beyond busy... and I was getting annoyed that the board would not keep me logged in via a cookie. They fixed that now. :)

If you really want the elec. ignition, the best thing to do would be to sell your 140 and buy an 86-88 IL6 115. Internally they are basically the same engine and there is no *real* horsepower difference.
