I'm a boat ramp jerk!

After all these years boating, I learn't an old but expensive lesson yesterday.
Coming into the jetty at Okahu Bay through the breakwater I could see they were very busy so was prepared to wait my turn and politely slip in with no fuss and get out of the way quickly.

That was the plan, first problem was that some folk at the jetty didn't know and most likely didn't care what the general protocol was.
Boats going out and coming in were all on the same side of the dock and no-one appeared to be moving! Another boat was in front of me and we were doing a slow dance waiting for a space to come available.
There it was and I moved back to let the first comer get in when "vvrroomm", in comes Mr I'm Important to steal the space! Waiting again I saw this bloke had no intention of quickly taking his boat out of the water as he started a prolonged discussion with another boater, thus two of them were wasting time.
The other boat eventually got in and then it was my turn, the space opened up in front of Mr I'm Important and he had no intention of moving forward as the discussion was now very animated.
Thus my error, I took the oppurtunity to slip in and stop just out of reach of the dock and the idea was to put it into reverse and let the "prop walk" sidle it into the dock (after all it's worked many times before). No! The !@#$^% motor cut out! Then the gentle breeze gently blew me out a little further and I lost my chance as another snot rag came in and disgorged its passengers.
Lesson learnt I came in 30min later. Guess what? Mr I'm Important was still yackety yackety with the other boater at the dock.

Oh, did I tell you at low tide there's only space for three aside at Okahu Bay dock!
Where's the authotities when you want them?

Gee, that feels much better, thanks folks, most thearaputic I must say........
Ross

Hi Ross

A bad case the busy boat ramp blues... I know the feeling and have experienced the same sort of thing at Half Moon Bay on busy days (have you ever tried that ramp?). These days I strive to avoid busy situations like that because unfortunately I've come to expect that kind of behaviour - and the short tempers that go with it.

Mind you - hasn't the weather been great for boating over the last week or so ? :)
Perfection ;)

62 Kiwi, I have'nt tried Half Moon Marina. No reason really I just haven't been there. Usually I go from Okahu or Westhaven during the weekdays when it's quiet, or on weekends from little known ramps like Torpedo Bay in Devonport or Algies Bay up north for Kawau Island.
Silly me forgot it is the holiday season.....

Crab Bait - I reckon if I had some threatening device that day I'd have waved it around so they all thought I was psychiatrically unwell and have given me a wide berth!!
It has worked before but that's another story......
Ross

Re: I'm a boat ramp jerk!

Hi folks....

Ain't it summertime for you guys down under?? Kind a' chilly right now along the muddy banks of the Ohio River. Wish I was there.

Know what ya' mean 'bout Mr. Important or how 'bout Mr. See How Fast My Boat Goes Past the Ramp area. These are the guys that irritate me the most. The Ohio River usually runs a pretty good current. Now you couple that with wakes from some idiot trying to look good for the bikinis on shore and it makes a tough launch or recovery. The Conservation folks tried no wake bouys but they diapear in no time. My significant other half really got mad one day and just started yelling at some joke doing the above. She didn't use the nicest language in the world on him. This guys turns around and comes back to see who this lady was. Well...mudcatmary just told him how it was....in no particular terms of endearment. This fellow got a little huffy and started mouthing off until a group of other boaters sidled around my boat that mudcatmary was standing in. The "gentleman" left. Got fairly quiet around the ramp area with a few good chuckles and laughs. Sometimes thats all it takes.

Enjoy your good boating weather and I'll be over here in Cold Ohio eating my heart out.

Jim

Outboardjim,

Good for you and "Mudcatmary". ;)

It's amazing how a woman telling an idiot off will make him think twice about his antics.
