My dad is worried about his 9.9. he purchased new from a dealer in 03, motor has 3yr warranty.

When he returns from a fishing trip he finds a small black oil puddle in the driveway-sometimes days later. He also sees emulsified oil in prop exhaust area. It does not have any resemblance to gear oil and the gear lube is fine. He is worried that something is wrong. We both know it is a 2s and oil is exhausted...but after owning a 1964 9.8 and a 1990 9.9-never had this problem. Dealer adjusted carb. Any input welcome!

its normal. remember, the exhaust comes outa the prop, right!?!
that black goo is just old oily fuel, unspent gass, whatever you wanna call it. 95% of all 2 strokes do that. when the motor/pistons are stopped, turned off, in JUST THE RIGHT POSITION, the exhaust ports are wide open, thus allowing the oil to drip out.

have fun

Thanks all.

a previous post today that read "two slaty (?) sisters..." by AngelaP70 got some really quick replies...I'm just trying to inject some humor and playing the damsel in distress card on the boating forum. I am not really a girl.

I did explain that to him and it does seem normal, but again he never noticed it on the old ones so he thinks something is wrong. The motor starts and runs excellent, does not foul plugs....what more do you want.

A lot of 9.9s don't come with a thermostat. They can be put in and that helps the motor burn the fuel more completely at low RPMs. Either that motor is used for trolling, or it just isn't opened-up much. Running that motor fast for a minute under load before stopping it would help clear alot of that crud out.

Oh, and your ploy worked. I usually aim for the goose-eggs...the ones that don't have a reply yet. Now I suppose we'll be flooded with "damsels in distress".

Thanks for the discussion. I'm not sure if this one has a tstat, the 1990 did because water only came out of the telltale after it was warm, not sure about the 03. Come to think of it it idles a lot before it is put on the trailer.

Went to my dad with this info, gave him a computer so he may be here soon! He showed me the paper towel he had shoved in the propshaft area to catch the mess and along with the oily stuff was a lot of grit. the grit is like pieces of sand only it is black and can be crushed flat with a screwdriver. I think it's carbon particles, it is not attracted to a magnet. Anything?
