hello all.
I have a new-to-me baretta. While cleaning and making ready to splash, I noticed this in the port side stern of the hull.
The trailer step (diamondplate) can be seen in a couple of the pictures.

It seems to me like a hole, but knowing precisely squat about fiberglass, I figured there would be a couple experts on here that may weigh in and enlighten me.

Also, any suggestions on how to repair would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Iboats dry dock, your at the right place.

looking at the 3rd/4th picture it definitely appears to breach in one point, it is not a hard fix, and there are quite a few documented repairs of this type. Do you have any access to the damaged area on the inside, likely not without cutting some floor. Should be someone chiming in that's a guru with glass, but my understanding a repair like this will need to be done from BOTH the inside and outside.

from reading a few topics, im guessing "PB" is what ya'll call "penutbutter". Now, should I grind out a bit first, or just fill over what's there?

Welcome ke5jro,

Yes you need to properly prepare the area surrounding the intended repair or you will end up with bad fix.

I forgot how far you need to open it up but I think you need something like a 5 to 1 ratio, or something like that, and it needs to be sort of dished out to make the repair. After that you will need to clean the area real good with acetone.

One of the pros here on iboats should be chiming in pretty soon to give the down&dirty on the subject...just give 'em some time, cause they are probably helping out about a couple hundred folks ata time...:)

And yes PB is peanut butter...it is made with the resin, the cabosil, and the 1/4 inch chopped strand, and the catalyst...One of the guys who have been there and done that made a video on Youtube, shows exactly how to make it...look up his thread under the handle of "FRISCOBOATER"

Welcome to iboats ,

Everyone has given you great advice, Man that looks familiar, have a look at my thread and see what I had to do to an exact same size repair in my hull. They did an ok repair and was holding out good.Repair was done a few years before I bought it and I run it a season and no problems. Make sure there is no other damage, Especially delamination of the fiberglass itself in other areas around the damage. If water got in through the hole that I see it might have made your foam wet, so you better check that too in that area. I am not saying yours will be like mine but check out post#33 a little hole can have alot of damage that can't be seen until you grind the gelcoat away and inspect the fiberglass. I was lucky I had to tear my boat apart for wet foam so I was able to do a proper repair.
Good luck

Re: I'm a new boat owner.....Is this a hole?

hi...
welcome to iboats !

yup......its a hole.and your foam will be wet......deck has to come up.

if you dont want to rip up your deck and just leave the water in there to rot the stringers and condem the boat in a season or two.

then this basic repair principal applies.

fill with PB... (cabosil, resin, milled fibers) glass over with 2 layers CSM... and gel coat and fair...

you will need to grind out the area......any white hairy like glass must be gone....it cannot take resin any more.

you will need to grind out an area at least 3 inches all the way around the area....and as for the area it self....grind it till you are at good glass. if you see the glass separating form each layer (de laminating).....keep grinding.

clean well with acetone....then add the peanut butter......then a layer of csm.....(i would also add a layer of 1708 to that one if you are doing a lot of grinding and the reapair is larger than you have now) then another csm.larger than the last.

then its just a standard gellcoat repair.

Allan .. welcome to Iboats :) ..

You really dont know if its a hole until its leaking from the inside ( you should tell us that ) .. or until you grind out the bad glass from the outside.

You Must have Good glass to lam on from the outside .. if its just cosmetic then go ahead with your PB and fix it from the outside.

If the repair is Close to going through then you should add a few layers on the inside.

So far all I see is just a scratch .. but that does not mean you Dont have a potential of a hole.

Will that little thing sink you if it failed .. dunno.. you have to determine that.

Grind out ..find out..then show some more pics .. ( thats what I would do )

YD.

yd in pics 3 and 4 it looks like a space between the inner layer of woven where the weaves cross....

if its not right thru......it is close enough to be down to the final inner layer of woven !......lol....not good

Re: I'm a new boat owner.....Is this a hole?

hello all, and thank you for the replies.
the warm welcome and advice is greatly appreciated.

yup......its a hole.and your foam will be wet......deck has to come up.
I had planned on replacing the deck, but not this soon. It may become a project sooner than planned. :)

Cadwelder, oops!
I didn't realize when i posted the pics, but the spot in the 3ed pic is a shadow from the flash. (was dark last nite when i took the pictures.)

JDA,
I cannot get to the inside without cutting deck, which i may do just to be sure.

I do know i have a soft spot in the front ahead of my ski locker. i have seen rotten wood there, so im guessing they're like roaches...if you can see rot, there is much more you can't see.

so, if this spot goes all the way to the inner layer of woven, would it be advisable to put csm on the inside? like a patch?

GT1M... i have seen FRISCOBOATER's videos. just found the one about making the pooky (as he calls it) :) thanks for that referral. great info there.

will post more as i get more info and pictures.

thanks again for all the great advice!

Is this a hole? you ask??
You mean the boat ?:D
Some people refer a boat as a hole.........(were you throw money in...)lol:facepalm:
just kiddin,What I really wanted to say the" pb" can also be bought in a can just mix in your resin and your done..
I dunno might be easier ..
west marine has a whole line of fillers suited for all kinds of repairs, just add resin till thick enough and you got your "peanut butter" (actually reffering to the thickness of the filler)
But if I were you I would take this as a SIGN,Your boat is actually telling you she needs a restauration!! soft deck you say?
not good. Not safe.
No worrys it can all be fixed and the experts here will pull you through it..welcome to i boats!!!

Re: I'm a new boat owner.....Is this a hole?

Sure looks like a hole to me. Take a small tiped screw driver and see if you can push it thru.
Bet it will go thru with little effort.
I would asume the worst and hope for the best.
There are some great people here to help you with whatever you decide to do.

That looks nasty and probably did damage the boat beyond repair. Glad your family is ok. I have seen one go through a roof of a house and the branch go through the first floor. Just imagine that arriving in the bedroom some night .Just curious is that a white pine ? Usually just the tops break off of them unless they have had a hard go from the start. they grow like a carrot. Looking at the way the branches grew on that one it did have problems over it's life. I am surrounded by them I have one that is 51 inches across the base and seems a mile high. They make me a little nervous at times. I remember one time it was -25 celcius for a few days and it was cold for about a month and a hurrcaine come in from the south. I never lost any but I tell ya I was surprised what a frozen tree will take for winds. They were 60-70 mile an hr. Time to look for a hull as you have the rest . Good Luck

if the deck is coning up......it is always advisable to put 2 layers of csm on top and at minimum one layer of 1708

Re: I'm a new boat owner.....Is this a hole?

*UPDATE*
had a few minutes earlier to look at suspected hole. i scraped it out a bit, and tried sticking a screwdriver thru it. inside seems solid...couldnt get screwdriver thru using light force. new pictures after scraping.
PICT2136.jpgPICT2135.jpgPICT2134.jpgPICT2129.JPG
seems i just need to grind it out and can patch from outside.

it's hard to tell dimensions from the pic, so i'm adding this.
damage area's total width=8" height=1.5" depth=0.125" to 0.318"

i am hoping to get a bit of water time out of it before i rip out deck to check stringers/subfloor. gotta get the wife to appreciate a boat, first. lol
