that is very deep.....the reason you could not get the screw driver thru it was more than likely the anti crush of the foam......but i can see foam......that means it is right thru

Yeppers I see foam too and the dimensions you are talking about will get bigger when you start cleaning up the bad glass. I know others have done temp fixes to get out a few more times before they put it in dry dock. Do a search, maybe you will find something or maybe someone will chime in. But with the foam exposed and probably wet ...I don't know what would cure to it for a temp fix.

I actually felt the same way as you about letting my better half enjoy it before I started working on her. Glad I got a season of good boating in before hand . Made the decision easier before I started.

Re: I'm a new boat owner.....Is this a hole?

im hoping to get something done this weekend. i cleaned out a bit, and it is NOT breached, and what looked like foam was just some weird tricks of light and shadows.
last couple weekends were either effin cold or raining. this weekend is supposed to be dry and nice.
will get more pics and post later.
thanks for asking i mike.

Re: I'm a new boat owner.....Is this a hole?

**UPDATE**
we had a nice day today, so i was able to get quite a bit done, and worked on the boat, too! :)
did a bit of grinding around the damage, and found it was not breached.
cleaned it up and applied the PB. it got dark and the temp dropped, so i called it a nite.
i plan to smooth it out and put a bit of csm on it tomorrow.

hmmm...can only attach 5 files per post.
will post again with pics of the PB.

Pics of PB filler.
PICT2159.jpgPICT2158.jpgPICT2160.jpg

after curing, will sand down and add a layer of csm, then gelcoat.
will post more pics as i get them.

thanks to all for help and advice!

Just a noobs observation/question..., would grinding an area about two or three times the size of the repair be apropriate before laying down at least a couple of increasingly larger layers of CSM, then fairing and gelcoating? or is that un-necessary? Thanks.

Yep, GT1M is correct, you should sand/grind the area back about 3-4 inches all the way around then apply from small to large football shaped layers of 1.5 oz. CSM to the area. I'd say a minimum of 3. Something like this...

Re: I'm a new boat owner.....Is this a hole?

Yes, GT1M, you're right. and that's the plan. because of where the damage is, i had to get the shape back first so there are no voids in my csm.
after this cures, i will be grinding the entire area and shaping the patch, then laying the csm over it.
basically, what i've done is just a filler before the repair itself. the pics of the grinding dont show the concave area where i removed the original csm and ground into the inside corner fillet, but there is a good 1" deep area that i filled with PB to try to regain the corner shape and give me a good base, all to avoid tearing up floor at this time.
the middle picture on post #27 gives a good indication of how much i had to fill to get that corner shape back. i used 3 oz. of resin on this.
thanks for the pic, woodonglass. i wasnt sure if the layers should be same size, or if they needed to be larger as i go out.

That is not CSM that is a light weight fiberclass cloth. You need to have CSM between each layer of cloth or it can and probably will delaminate. Sorry but you'll prolly need to grind it off and purchase some CSM. You can use the cloth, but if you do it should be CSM, Cloth, CSM, Cloth, CSM.

didnt notice the light/dark spots till just now. cant really see them unless the light is hitting just right.
the whole thing is smooth, so im thinking it's just reflections from the light.

i'll admit, i had some reservations about working with fiberglass, mostly because i had never done it, nor did i know anything about it.
after reading this forum, and watching friscoboater's videos, it turned out much easier than i had imagined.

oh sh!t. i did get that mixed up, didnt i? i was so worried about making it stick and building it back up and a thousand other things, i wasnt paying attention to which material i grabbed. that one is the 1.5 cloth, and not the mat.

so, just the cloth wont work, huh?

Not really, I wouldn't chance it. Grind it off and do it right.

Re: I'm a new boat owner.....Is this a hole?

ground off the cloth today
PICT2173.jpgPICT2174.jpg

this time i put the csm on....tho it's hard to see in this pic, but the damn cloth shows up quite well.
PICT2176.jpg

had a bit of time, and still good weather, so started looking around to see if there were any more spots that needed the gelcoat touched up......

and found this.
PICT2177.jpgPICT2178.jpg

this is about 3' long, 1/4" wide, and im guessing it's all the way thru the hull.
from the looks of it, it was made by a skill saw or something along those lines.
looks like resin dripping out in the first pic.
i gotta pull floorboard this time. i just dont have room to get under it while it's on the trailer.

seems i still have a bit of repair on the hull to do.
YAY ME!!!!

Yep, looks like someone went through the sole with a circ saw... Good luck, good job on the other repair.
