That tap is a dryseal tap (straight), it's not a regualr pipe tap. Try McMaster-Carr, if I get a chance I'll chase down a P/N. We do NOT have this style of tap at the shop.

If I get a chance I'll find a decent price. I buy all the cutting tools for the shop, I know lots of suppliers. Good luck Papa, nothin's ever easy. I need to do this repair on mine also.

Thanks for the effort Don - it's not so much about spending the money as it is wanting to get some verification that I'm looking at the right parts:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=502558

But all I got was a 470 owner telling me not to buy aftermarket bellows.

I don't know why, but I don't have very good luck asking questions over there.

I spose I could just get the tap from that ebay link, but I really need to know if that's the right cable kit.

Give a peek at McMaster part no. 2526A43 - that also looks to me to be correct, but kinda short overall. Whachya think? I'm very hesitant to go at this without verification. I don't wanna spend the rest of my summer saving up for a new gimbal housing cause I blew this one thing.

I seem to remember a place called "Sterndrives" on the net. They sell original Mercruiser parts and have a help line. I'll look them up when I get a chance, I gotta read Treasure Island now.

Good night all.

Treasure Island - a CLASSIC!

Hey I did get the foam situated pretty nicely yesterday though. Glued it all together with PL's "foamboard" stuff. I neglected to take pictures cause a pileated woodpecker dropped a bomb on me - right smack in the middle of the forehead. I just threw the cover on the boat and went home.

Oh when will this humidity cease?

Hey Papa... I was trying to help look on the net. However from what I see its not easy finding a 1/4" -18. And from what the ebay listing says you cant use a NPT type tap (all new stuff to me). If I find something Ill let ya know.

These guys can help. Their website is very informative. Email any questions you have to them. Be sure to post any responses for the Starmadians that come behind you.

Woodpecker poop is pretty harsh Paparoof, better take a little time to heal up!

Yah, the humidity is getting to be a drag. I'd just assume a bird take a dook on me than deal with the humidity.

Course you got both which is pretty cool.

Paparoof, I was admiring your gantry (Nice!), and was wondering what the length of those 4x4's you used for the legs were. I'm in need one of those gantry's myself for an engine pull on my Islander. They look like 12 footers. Would 10 footers be tall enough??

Pretty sure they're 16 footers. I'm not positive since it was over a year ago now that I built it. They do not need to be that tall, but I wasn't about to build the whole thing and then find out it was too short, so I opted for erring on the side of being absurdly tall.

I think I gave six feet for the transom of the boat as it sits on the trailer, another three feet for the motor itself, a couple feet for the chain hoist, another couple feet for the load leveler, and another couple feet for the chains and one more foot just for the helluvit: 6+3+2+2+2+1=16.

Of course it's not actually 16 feet off the ground cause they're at an angle - prolly closer to 15 feet, but I haven't measured it.

As soon as I have this transom buttoned up properly, I'll be getting rid of it. You want it? I'd happily give it away to another Starmada Brother (or sister).

That would be nice, and very appreciated, to bad it would cost me more in gas to come get than it would to build one.

..... Not from me about a half hour. I think I remember seeing that one on CL.

I have some rough sawn 12 foot 2x6's in the shed, I'm going to make the gantry out of those. 2x6's for the legs and 2 - 2x6's for the beam, put some gussets on there and it should be beefy enough to pull that 4 cylinder motor.

You should be alright with 12 footers. I'm sure I have three or four feet of play room with mine and if you omitted the load leveler, that would get the motor up a couple feet higher. I think you'll be fine.

Oh what a rollercoaster it's been this summer. Alright, here's the latest.

Pulled the motor last weekend and dropped it into a trailer for easier access to the couple things on the transom that still needed replacing. Put a new waterflappythingy into the exhaust tube to keep water from sucking up into the engine when you shut it off.

I pulled off one of those 42-dollar bolts cause it was leaking when I filled the hull with water. Re-gooped with 5200 and reinstalled.

Then one of the inside-the-boat trim hoses fell off at the transom end. NO!! The tube came right out of the fitting. And of course , it's a spot that there's no way in **** I can get a tool in there to either re-crimp the fitting or screw in a new hose, so I'm thinking I have to pull the whole ****** transom plate off again so I can get to it. Then I find this thread that shows how you access these fittings from outside the boat! YES!!!

Then I go online and find that the two inside hoses go for about 100 bucks for the pair! NO!!!

Whatever, at least it happened now instead of when I'm drifting in the middle of Lake Superior with the prop trimmed up outta the water.

Then, let's see what else....

Oh yeah! I also started painting the inside of the cabin. I'm the most boring person in the universe so I'm going with gray paint so it matches the grey porch paint I'm using on the deck and bulkhead walls. I'd pulled off the big V-shaped seat top back when I applied the gluvit and figured I may as well clean up and paint the inside of the cabin before I put it all back together. I sanded the walls down, wiped 'em good with vinegar and water then tried a Rustoleum "stainless steel" paint (one their "Pro" spray cans) and it reacted very strangely - it built up instantly into this weird fuzzy stuff. I'm sure I did something wrong, but whatever. Next day I sanded that all down, did the vinegar and water thing and went with a Duplicolor "light grey". This went on very nicely. A bit darker then I'd imagined, but I'm fine with it. Two cans didn't cover it all so I need to get another couple cans and go back to finish it, THEN I'll take a picture and post it up for y'all.

The new lower shift cable and the special tap showed up the other day so those are just waiting for me to get to 'em now.

Overall, I'm still moving forward. I'll be back at it this coming weekend, but not this Sunday evening, there's a Led Zeppelin tribute band playing in a local park so I'm going to that instead. So there. :p
