You still need a solenoid unless you run battery cable to an old foot style switch that can handle the amperage You need for starting (not a good idea in My opinion) If you are jumping across the solenoid to start it now instead of jumping between the 2 larger positive poles try jumping from the pole where positive comes in from battery, to the pole where ignition wire comes from switch if it doesn't work solenoid is bad or not grounded properly if it does work problem is with switch or wires between the two.If your jumping at the starter now try jumping the solenoid as described should be able to quickly troubleshoot and fix this. Also not sure but guessing You have a neutral safety switch somewhere possible its adjusted wrong or not working easy to check with a cheap tester with motor in neutral check for continuity between the poles if none switch is bad or needs adjusted (mine is in control and slotted holes to adjust you probably have one on bracket where control cables hook on motor). Great pics and glad to see You relaxing in the back hope some of this helps:) Not real common but in some applications I have seen a fusible link on the ignition wire near the solenoid might be worth looking...

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

Got 'er out again tonight - the kids and the dog got their first ride and loved every second of it. I made 'em ask for "permission to come aboard Sir!"

I had the spare prop on this time and while I was still waiting for the Admiral to arrive with the kids, I took it out alone to see if the prop change truly eliminated the slipping out of "gear" problem and it sure did. Took it up to 38 mph (GPS) and still hadn't quite hit WOT. I stayed off of WOT cause I still don't have a working tach so I could easily be over-revving the motor without knowing it's happening. I don't think it's unreasonable to think I could hit 40 mph with no passengers, the right prop and trim tweaking. Pretty nifty eh?

The fellas are coming into town this weekend for a sturgeon trip. It'll also be the kick in the pants I need to get the lights hooked up cause we'll be out past dark. Gotta big ole anchor too - can't still fish in a big ole river without a big ole anchor. It'd be pretty sweet to get some fish slime on my new deck before I put it away for the winter.

Sunday I'm gonna meet up with a couple local Starmada members (Losdinspace and hopefully Chuckndiscs) for a Twin Cities Mini-Tin-Stock.

Then I'll pull her home, change the oil/lube, get some Propylene Glycol in her, put 'er up for the winter and start working on the to-do list for the spring.

Somehow I missed the Sept. 7th pictures. Awesome! I love having someone else drive me around in my own boat. Certainly hasn't been my wife yet though. Glad you're getting some use out of it before your absolutely ridiculously long winter starts up there.

Sure EZ rub it in. Last year I was on the water and 3 days later we had 9" of snow.

i'm assuming you mean the way his sturgeon fishing buddies will "find" his boat when they show up?

if not, you have a broad definition of "cleaning";) why, he cleaned the old transom and floorboards and drivetrain right out of that boat......:D

These guys don't give a rip - trust me.

I did get all that crap out, but the (new) floor is dirty already, and I did put back the original grungy-as-hell jump seats and doghouse, so even though I know all the great work I've done, it really looks pretty bad in there right now.

But again, these guys don't care. These guys are happy fishing out of my 14-footer with a 6 HP outboard. It doesn't take much to impress them.

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

Now for a little serious business. I left out a detail from last night's story and the guilt is killing me. But if Kev can fess up to launching his boat through the air into a field, I can fess up to this:

I wrecked my "spare" prop last night.

Bought another on CL today and it doesn't fit.

Read the embarrassing details here:

Thoughts? (I mean besides "ha! ha!")

Awww man!

I feel compelled to hack on ya a little.

But what I really just want is for you to go and have some fun on the Islander before she goes into hibernation!

I had one of those in the 70's great boat for fishing.used to fish lake erie(Pa)with it.The two holes as said is your drain and overflow(vent) for lower unit oil. The green you see might be lower unit oil. Merc oil was green in color. If the green is on the starboard side it verywell could be antifreeze. Is it around the lower unit water intake? If they put in antifreeze it will drain out of water intake.
