I agree with both of you. The engine that I have is Mercruiser BB. What I need to do is stop talking myself into this slug and realize that if want to be into boat this size, I need twins or a much newer boat with the correct power plant. I bought the engine in hopes to put it in my Thompson. I was over excited when I bought the engine. My plans were to put the motor in, thru-hull exhaust silent choice. I planned on making her unqiuely fast but silent. making her nothing anyone would expect. I wanted to get all my playing and toying with out of my system. But then I realized that I didnt care and just wanted to cruise, float, and enjoy.
And so now I have a rebuilt merc BB. I suppose Ill hold onto it I bought it of my old neighbor at the marina. he had too to sell. he was going to repower his old sea ray but bought a newer boat instead. I think I will ask for a sea trial but I dont believe I will be buying. Im going to wait until next year. My finances will only be better so I could potentially buy even newer.

Sounds good Greg! Definitely take the sea trial. I am glad you have the "marine" knowledge and I am sure you will choose wisely.

I have limited marine knowledge. But I hope it's enough to avoid a huge mistake.

Greg,
Take her for sea trial. Since your realize that she's a 2855, your already 1000Lbs lighter than our 2859. As others have stated, the sail factor can be important, but that all depends upon the skill and confidence of the captain.
I have no problem approaching or leaving a dock with ours even it crap weather and do it every weekend no matter the weather and this boat is one big sail.

The B3 gives you much better control around the docks and you'll like the drive.

Hey thanks Glen. Ive gotten pretty good around the docks even in the wind. My major concern will be the over-all performance of the boat. I can't have her lacking when she's load up. She needs to stay on plane while maintaining a moderate cruising speed. I honestly don't thing she will. But if I do become her new captain I will be excited about the bravo 3. I've never had one but have piloted a boat with one. And it was quite nice.

Everyone that I've ever known that purchased an underpowered Bayliner has been unhappy and then have a hard time unloading them...

I figured this to be the case. Only thanks to all of you guys. I took the advice and bought a 1991 Thompson 310 Santa Cruz. 300 hours twin 5.0L's. All new everything from cabin Upholstry to canvas. And she comes with a newer eagle stainless tri axle trailer. $21k

Well the survey didn't happen. The seller received a better offer and he took it. Fine with me. My wife and I were a little bummed so we drove up to CT yesterday morning and checked out a lead on a 1999 2855 Ciera. Extremely clean, 7.4 Mag, bravo 3. She fell in love with it. They wanted $30k. I negotiated $26.5k with a two year engine drive warranty and a shore lander tri-axle aluminum trailer. Maybe it was ment to be. We take to the sea trial in a few weeks. If she does well, she will follow me home. We are actually very happy and comfortable with this boat purchase. Although I did love that Thompson, I feel very secure with this Bayliner. I don't have any pictures yet. It was wrapped up with an access panel. But I will have some soon. Positive or negative feedback???

Drive back to CT, pay 1/3 that price and grab my 29'er... :D

I think the single big block will be a lot better choice than a small block.

Much better combination, Greg. I think the big block will probably be adequate for your needs. IMO, the price is a bit high, but I assume you're buying from a dealer rather than a private seller, so you're paying a premium there, as well as for the warranty.

I'd make sure the warranty will be honored if work needs to be done locally- you don't want to tow it back several hours for something minor. Finally, you didn't mention having a professional survey done. I personally wouldn't lay out even half that amount without one. It'll cost you 1-2% of the purchase price... and make sure you hire your own surveyor.

Keep us posted- I'm enjoying the 'saga'

I agree with JoLin about the survey. What dealer/broker is selling the boat? Also pm me and I can get you the broker we recently used for the 34' in my sig.

In need a survey but can't find one nearby. The boat is located in Brookfield, CT. Echo Bay Marina (.com). Candlewood Lake. I thought that $26500 was high but ok for trailer and 2 year warranty. Hey mustang, what does IMO and pm mean?

IMO= in my opinion, PM= private message (function of sending a message on the message board to a specific person without starting a thread)
