I have a 9.5HP evinrude sportwin Model No. 99225 serial No. E05375 I don't know anything about this motor or any other for that matter. I'd like to know what year it is, and also What I should do to get it ready for use. I bought it 5 years ago at which point it had been completely rebuilt and was squeaky clean. It ran great. I only used it for 1 week, then I put it away and haven't touched it in five years. I recently put new oil in the lower unit and added some fresh fuel to the tank to see if it would start. It started right up but was smoking like crazy, and even in neutral it seemed to be running at full throttle. the idle adjustment didn't seem to do anyhting. I finally shut it down for fear of screwing something up. Is any of this normal? What else, beside changing the lower unit oil should I do? Any help would be appreciated . Thanks

Re: I'm completely clueless.

You have a 1969 9.5 Evinrude.

You might want to change the impellor, 5 years is alot of dry rot on one. Check the carb and make sure that the linkage is not stuck in the wide open position.

An impellar is the rotating member in your water-pump. Its a rubber piece that should be replaced/inspected every couple years....Its located in the lower portion of the motor.
You really should have a manual to familiarize yourself with the components... :)
