Hey,

Buying a new boat. While it's being built I'm deciding on an engine. For about the same price ($400 difference) I can get either a Yamaha 150HP Carb four stroke, or a Yamaha 200HP EFI 2 stroke.

Boat is a Sea Pro 206 Walkaround, 2400 pounds dry w/o motor, 20'6" hull centerline.

I decided on the 2 stroke 200. Or at least I thought I did. Without starting another war, what would you do?

On one side, the 200 is a stronger performer, at the max recommended HP range for this boat. Max HP Period is 225. The 200 is EFI which I like the thought of. The 2 stroke is less maintenance, less parts, etc.

The only real benefit I can see with the four stroke is resale, a bit of economy and overall noise. 150 is the minumum rec'd HP for this boat.

So let's hear it.... :)

An underpowered boat makes an unhappy seaman.
You will be close to 4000# fully rigged and loaded, you will want the extra ponies.

( Assuming that motor, controls, batteries, fuel, safety gear, personal gear, water?, cooler(s), food, and 4 humans, etc , still need to be added.)

My vote would go for the 200 EFI as well. Being underpowerd sucks. On the other hand, if you plan on doing a lot of trolling or idling, the four stroke may be better for this application.

150 doesn't seem like a lot of HP for that heavy of boat but what are you going to use the boat for.
The 4 stroke advantages are in trolling, noise and fuel (Likely) The 2 stroke will be faster. Decide how you are going to use the boat most and what your priorities are then you will know what the right motor is.

In similar situation in repowering my boat and the 150 4s doesn't compare to the power of the 200 2s. I'm battling between the 200 EFI 2s and the 200 4s as the HPDI has had issues.
