The motor on my 1987 Rude 140 went. Here's what I'm up against.

Boat has been running great, one day out it seemed like it was lugging then I heard like a metal chatter from motor so I shut it off right away, used kicker to start in then got towed the rest of the way.

Took boat to shop and compression on top two were 125, bottom port was 115, and bottom starboard was 90. By had turning the crank the lower starboard piston coming off tdc clunked and could be moved with screwdriver about 1/4" and said it could be a wrist pin but I was told to find out what was wrong he would have to disassemble.

He found:
Motor has been repaired before, was a hole in the block, crank had a galling, so basically it was going to need to be rebuilt.
Using good used parts it was going to be around $2700

If money wasn't a problem I would just replace the motor that being said should I have the motor rebuilt or find a good used running motor? I've seen some on craigslist around $1000-$1500 that state they are running great but would have to have it tested some. Should I have mine rebuilt or look for a newer motor I could afford? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think that decision is better left to you and your finances. A properly rebuilt 2 stroke, provided it has a good block, can last a long time. Buy another used engine, you may get other issues that you have to repair in a year or so. The real answer is going to be up to you...

Thanks Knightgang, that is what I was comcerned about with a used motor, unless it came from a reputable dealer!

I think I'd be looking for a similar year 140 with good compression numbers. Then you'd have a parts motor. Sometimes there are nice motors hanging off trashed boats that can be had for a song.

I've been following craigslist but haven't seem anything that might be worth investing in under $1500 yet!

$2700 for a rebuild using "good used parts" is too much, IMO. If using all new pistons (which would almost be a necessity anyways it sounds like), bearings, rings, honing/boring the cylinders, $2700 would sound about right.
Whatever you decide, if you do keep this one and rebuild it, make sure you find out what happened to it. Have the carbs rebuilt and cleaned, check all fuel lines for debris in them, etc.

Pistons, rings, bearings would be new and block, crank would be used.

I believe what happened was a while back after a carb rebuild boat still didn't seem like 100%. Then one day couldn't get back on plane. After removing air silencer saw that there was little fuel going into that cylinder. I pulled the carb and found a metal shaving that was blocking the high speed jet that had to be missed when they were rebuilt. I've been running a racor filter plus an inline filter so I'm sure it was missed on rebuild. So at this point i'm guessing that caused a lean problem which over heated and caused the failure. Also motor had been repaired prior to me buying boat.

IMHO you would be better off either finding another engine like yours used and just running it with some maintenance, or go to another engine altogether. The crossflow engines are good engines but are prone to detonation and coking, particularly with today's fuel. This may be a chance to get something more modern.
I can't see having your rebuilt due to both the block and crank being bad. Basically you would end up with something like 5 rod and pistons and your ignition and fuel system.
You may want to join Scream and Fly.com and post in the engines wanted, bet you would get many responses, X-flows are not hard to find.

Mine isn't a crossflow, it's a looper. I was told the looper is a better motor.

Thanks for all the replies.

It looks like I'm going to repower with a newer motor. I've had a hard time convicing myself to put 3K into a 22 yr old motor. I've seen some complete boat, motor, trailer package for around $3500 with a lot newer motor which I could swap and then try to pedel the remains.

I have several 87-88 small bore/bridgeport 140 blocks in my junk pile, they will need to be bored but will make you a heck of a deal if you need one, $-0- just pay shipping. Also rods are same as V-6 loopers and easy to find used also call Jack at business below, their in your area he has tons of used parts(1-877-407-8401)

Re: I'm in Trouble

Thanks again for all the advise. Had a line on a Yam 150 salt series but my mechanic said to be carefull with on older (10 yr) because Yams are notorious for corrosion is they aren't flushed out after salt or brackish water, so now I'm a little gun shy about that one dur to not really knowing the history other than heresay.
