Just wondering how others are making out in the stock market. I'm in both the NYSE and the TSX. Things were great from about March up to about November last year and since......it's been brutal.
Stocks that I thought would perform have tanked and the exact opposite happens with others. Maybe I'm just a lousy picker, who knows.
Very pleased to see that Warren Buffet split his "B" shares 50/1 so the ordinary guy can invest.....at $70 a share I'm not so sure that's and ordinary guy amount.

Re: I'm losing my shirt

At the end of 2001 I lost about 1/3 of the value of my savings; in fall of 2007 I lost half of what was left. Then I switched my assets to CMOs.

In Spring of last year I bought 10K shares of Ford at $1.58, then sold them in the Fall at $12.30. Got back about half of what I had lost with perfect timing and perfect luck.

All back in CMOs at 5.5%. I probably used up 4 generations worth of smart moves with the Ford deal, so no more speculation. . . none.

Soooo happy to hear that JB...couldn't happen to a nicer person as well:)

I'm kicking myself for NOT buying Ford at $1/share:rolleyes:

With Toyota's recall debacle Ford stands to benefit nicely and may reinstate a dividend this decade too:D Great to see manufacturing on the uptick in the states...even if it's a small uptick. They recently announced that they are hiring a few hundred new workers here in Michigan and that news is about as good as it gets.

I bought a bunch of stock when everything was in the crapper. I haven't checked today.... but most of my stocks have at least doubled. I just wish I would've purchased more of them... :)

Re: I'm losing my shirt

After ?staying the course? as advised by the gurus that my employer brought in several years ago, I lost my shirt with my 401K. Now I have any bucks in the safest option that is offered. Interest sucks but at least I haven?t lost any more. At a meeting several months ago because they changed financial institutions, I enquired why a FDIC insured option with interest rates competitive with bank rates is not available. (I would think that a 401K is equivalent or better than a CD.) I was told that they would look into it. When I enquired a while later I was curtly told that it is being looked at and if they decide to do anything they will let me know.

I am wondering if there is a ?401K type qualified? place that I can invest that is FDIC insured.

We lost 50% when things started to tumble. Now we have gained what was lost and a little more. We are diversified and we get dividends on all of our investments. Learned my lesson getting in on the end of the .coms and lost. If it does not have a dividend we do not purchase. Have carried GE for years but, screwed up there also, should have bought more when it dropped to 5.50, a couple of my friends have doubled their return.

your funds have been deposited at a financial institution of some sort. schwab and fidelity handle bazillions of 401k plans but most mutual fund co's offer them. insurance in an account like that would be thru SIPC instead of FDIC.

you may have a self-directed option. if so, you should be able to choose cd's or bonds instead of only mutual funds.

Re: I'm losing my shirt

I read that after President Obama's State of the Nation, speech the stock market should start to move upwards......Dow Jones is down almost 100 points and the TSX/S&P is also down 100 points.

I hope the guru who wrote that story is preparing an explanation as to why it has done the opposite.

I'm glad that up here in the Great White North everybody dresses in layers, so I have lots more layers to go.....LOL
