Wife and kids bought me (without my input) a brand-new, 27" Poulan Pro 2-stage in 2008 following my heart attack. I have a pretty good sized driveway and entryway to clear (about 2000 sq. ft total), but that Poulan was just too big, too heavy and too ponderous for the amount of snow we usually get here. I hated having to haul it out of the garage. I sometimes wondered if that thing was gonna CAUSE me another heart attack rather than preventing one.
I finally threw in the towel a few months ago, sold off the monster and bought a used Toro 21" single stage 2-stroke. Rebuilt the carb, put in a new plug and fresh gas. So far we've had 4 decent snowfalls including today's, and that little sucker just whips right through it. With temperatures in the single digits and teens it's started every time on the second pull.
Today was warmer (30 deg) and it started on the first pull. I was a little concerned that today's snow might be too wet and heavy for it, so I started when the snow hit 4" (5-8" is predicted before it ends this evening). It struggled just a tiny bit in some of the deeper spots, but it's doing the job. It even chopped through the 8" of packed stuff the town plow left at the foot of the driveway. Best of all it's a snap to maneuver, the paddle blade pulls it along with almost no pushing on my part, and the chute controls are very handy and easy to use.
It takes me LESS time to blow the place out than it did with the big guy. Just one of those circumstances where 'less is more'.
(good choice, John - LOL)
