Wife and kids bought me (without my input) a brand-new, 27" Poulan Pro 2-stage in 2008 following my heart attack. I have a pretty good sized driveway and entryway to clear (about 2000 sq. ft total), but that Poulan was just too big, too heavy and too ponderous for the amount of snow we usually get here. I hated having to haul it out of the garage. I sometimes wondered if that thing was gonna CAUSE me another heart attack rather than preventing one.

I finally threw in the towel a few months ago, sold off the monster and bought a used Toro 21" single stage 2-stroke. Rebuilt the carb, put in a new plug and fresh gas. So far we've had 4 decent snowfalls including today's, and that little sucker just whips right through it. With temperatures in the single digits and teens it's started every time on the second pull.

Today was warmer (30 deg) and it started on the first pull. I was a little concerned that today's snow might be too wet and heavy for it, so I started when the snow hit 4" (5-8" is predicted before it ends this evening). It struggled just a tiny bit in some of the deeper spots, but it's doing the job. It even chopped through the 8" of packed stuff the town plow left at the foot of the driveway. Best of all it's a snap to maneuver, the paddle blade pulls it along with almost no pushing on my part, and the chute controls are very handy and easy to use.

It takes me LESS time to blow the place out than it did with the big guy. Just one of those circumstances where 'less is more'.

(good choice, John - LOL)

Re: I'm Loving my Toro Snowblower

When I lived in Minnesota, I got initiated to MN snow by the Halloween Storm of 1991. 29" in 24 hours.

On the way home from Fargo, ND, I phoned my wife and stated: "I'm buying a snow blower on the way home". It stretched the budget but she said-OK. We knew we would need one.

On the way home, I bought an 8 HP off brand (MTD) at Home Depot.

That weekend I ran five gallons of gas through that thing!

My "off brand" blower was the only one that worked, many times, in years and storms to come.

Why?

I replaced the belts-yearly.
Kept the oil and gas fresh.
Had auger pins at hand.

It always started (first pull) and ran flawlessly.

My sons made a lot of $$$ using that blower. At 11 and 12 years old, they were pro's at using it.

MAINTENANCE pays.

Re: I'm Loving my Toro Snowblower

I just bought a Toro single stage snow thrower for my lake house as well. It's probably 8 or so years old. I used it at home for a few snowfalls until I brought it up. I have one of those big snowblowers for the main house but I was surprised at the amount of power the little 2-stroke has. It is easy to maneuver but I don't like the mixed gas situation. The only thing I can really say bad about the snowthrower versus the large snowblower is the snowthrower doesn't blow smaller amounts of snow good. There is a certain minimum amount of snow that it seems to need in order to blow far enough. The big guy on the other hand will blow any amount of snow far. The little 2 stroke also does a way better job clearing all the way down to the pavement.

When I brought it up to the lake, I cleared a small skating rink worth of snow at about 2 feet deep from the ice. Just as I was finishing, the belt started squeaking badly. I shut it off and put it away so not sure if it was just too hot or what.

Honestly after using the single stage, the big snowblower is probably overkill 7 out of 10 times I use it. The end of the driveway plow drift takes a lot longer to clear with the 2 stroke though.

I've got a 25 year old toro ccr1000 and they are a great little snowblower. Most of the time it is plenty for the snow we get here.

That's the thing. I used the Poulan through 5 winters and about a dozen snowfalls. There were only 2 times that its size and power were an advantage. I'm sure the day will come when I wish I still had it, but now I know what the Toro's limitations are. If that means going out 2 or 3 times during a major storm I'll just have to deal with it for that day.

The Toro handles 6-8" of powder or about 4" of wet stuff in one pass.

Probably why when clearing 2 feet of snow in one pass, the belt started squeaking. It eats the full 24 inches up like nothing. I really think these things are a testament of 2 stroke technology (or lack thereof).

You must not have snowmobiles?

Total driveway length is 1/2 mile so a 'walk behind' is out of the question. I went with the John Deere blower and wish to hell I had a cab for those windy days when half of the darn snow blows back on me.
