Wow, a 24 foot boat with a 6 foot beam? That's kinda weird.

What's the dry weight of the boat without the motor, and what's the weight of each motor? What props are installed on the motors? What is the gear ratio of each lower unit?

On a 24 foot boat the 175 would obviously be the best performer. If you are unhappy with a 90, the 115 is not that much bigger hence the 175 seems to make sense. Fuel mileage in miles per gallon is too vague a number without speed factored in so gallons per hour at wide open throttle is a better measure. The 115 will burn about 11.5 g/hr and the 175 will burn about 17.5 g/hr at WOT. Both will burn about 2/3 of those numbers at between 1/2 and 3/4 throttle. All of those numbers are approximate and it all depends on the load, engine condition and state of tune, water confditions and condition of the hull.

ok the boat is a 2472 seaark aluminum boat mod-v front with a 3 degree hull pretty much a flat bottom 72inch bottom 96in beam, the empty hull weight is a little under 1000 pounds but if i purchase it i will install a 30 gallon gas tank 100 gallon livewell located in the middle of the boat (i fish catfish tournys on the ohio and mississppi rivers.) i havent purchased the boat yet the as said it has a 90hp motor now the owner states it run 35-40 mph which is fast enough but its olny got a 10 gallon gas tank no livewell and is pretty much a empty boat .i want the boat to run 38-42 range im not much on running much over 50 on the water. its sounds as the boat would run close to the range of what i want it to run the way it is but im afraid if i go putting the extra weight in it im talking about it will take over the speed of the boat.i had a 2072 before with a 90 and it weighed 200 pound less and was set up the way i want set this one up and it run 45 before all the add ons and 38 after with 80 gallon of water in the livewell.ive got a local dealer who has always taken good care of me that has the motors im talking about both are 1990 model one is a 115 and the other is a 175 both mercury .i know it always better to overpower than to underpower....just needing some help on deciding what to do here .........thanks for your help so far and look foward to hearing some more info........

Go with the 175.It will have power to spare and when run at the speeds of the 90 will get close to the GPH of the 90 and be loafing at the same time.
While it's true it will run about 17.5 gph.@ wot; with careful setup and a little luck it could be noticeably less.

I think you better check the power rating on the transom of that boat. I doubt if it is rated for anything more that about 125 hp max as that is a very light boat. A 175 hp would be nice but you don't want to tear out the transom showing off for your buddies.

I agree too on 175 being a bit much on an alum john fishing boat even if it is 24 ft long. 175 is a big engine.
