This is the sort of post that will make people think I'm slipping away....
Last summer I was building a retaining wall in front of the house and using a masonry saw borrowed from a friend. Every time I cut a stone, a large fly would come around, as though attracted by the dust and/or the noise, and sit somewhere near me - I mean very near me. The first time it happened I figured it to be an anomaly of some kind. But the thing kept coming back whenever I would fire up the cutter.
The next day I was in my back yard making up some wood trim for the end of the wall and - yep, when I ran the circular saw, there was that fly again. (Or his brother or cousin...) Lit right next to the work, dust and noise and all.
Why do I mention it now? Because I was making a garden bench this afternoon and when I started up the circular saw, a large fly sat down right in the dust. Wave it away, started cutting, and here he came again - just like last summer.
Do any of you guys know of a reason for this behavior? I can't believe it's only happened to me..!! On the other hand, I don't understand why it's never happened in the many years past in which I've done similar work.
(I feel like the guy sitting at the red light fishing for the cigarette that has fallen between his legs, when the bus pulls up beside him. Who's going to believe me...??)
