Re: I'm stuck

Steve,

It's not that I don't want to take your advice, it's that it wouldn't be prudent at this time. I intend to buy a condo with a friend and I don't need two "toy" loans. I would love to go and pick up the brand new 2008 Formula 260 at a local dealer, pay for it over 20 years and enjoy the hell out of it. I can't do that. If anyone is interested, it's a beautiful boat and the dealer is on the up and up but if worse comes to worse, I know that Formula would back it up. Formula is local to me so I'd love to buy one of their boats, and I will someday.

That Cobalt they have is nice too, repo boat with a VERY clean engine and cockpit. The boat just needs some love and some attention to be a great buy. It could be had for a song I'm told, I was very tempted to sing.

I think I'm headed on a major road trip this weekend to see and hopefully buy my Wellcraft. The used Formulas fell through. 27' ,as advised, is probably too big. If all goes well, I'll post pics next week. I'm still currently awaiting some bids on shipping her instead of retrieving her myself.

Thank you all very much. You have really helped and made me think about my purchase. I'll let you all know what happens.

-Andy

Did you try Uship.com for the shipping quotes? May be worth a try if not. That's how I got mine shipped to home. $350 for a 250+ mile pull, and the shipper carried his own spares, tools, and serviced the trailer bearings before he pulled it. I actually could have gotten it for less, as I had lower bids, but this guy was local to my hometown, so he got my business.

Yup, 650 mile pull. I'm up around $1K right now on uship and that's just pulling. One guy has offered to take care of whatever happens and settle up, but wow. I can drive out and back with the boat for around $500+. IF...I repeat, IF nothing happens I kill two days driving out and back and save a bundle.

That reminds me, are most trailer wheels standard bolt pattern? If so, I have plenty of spares.

Basically, this boat is everything I want at half the price I'm willing to pay. If it turns out as described, I'm going to be a very happy man. There is only one thing missing that I need to have and that is a second battery and a switch.

I would have gone and gotten mine as well, and only been out gas and food, but...well...I am kinda' not able to do that at the moment. If I were in your shoes, I would do the drive myself, but that's me...and I like road trips.

Hey Andy, I got your situation now. I'd probably do the same. ROAD TRIP>>>!!!!! Take a buddy with you that's been around a few boats and tell the seller he's doing the survey. Watch the reaction of the seller when your buddy is poking around. Unless the seller is a real scam artist it will be an easy read. Trust your instincts, if it doesn't feel right, walk.

yeah, it's kinda hard to convince a buddy to spend a weekend in a truck. I'm gonna go with the idea that most people are good. It's only failed me a few times and I read people pretty well. A handshake and a look in the eyes, I'll know if it's a wasted trip. I just really, really...really hope it's not a wasted trip. If it is, I'll be inclined to waste another trip...a few years down the road. I have asked this gentleman for extreme honesty and disclosure and I think he is giving me that. If I drive 10 hours and he was bs'ing me...I'll be very upset. Very upset to say the least. 10 hours will be the least of my worries at that point.

No worries bro! If you have read any of my other posts on here, you will see I can take it as well as I give it! :D My BIL just returned stateside from Afghanny-land a couple of months ago. My prayers are with your loved ones as well! BTW...pics are expected, or the boat does not exist...

Well, it's on. I spoke with the current owner tonight and he is VERY concerned with where and how I'm going to store her. In short, either he's a very good actor or he's a genuinely a great person. I'm leaning on the latter. I'm so confident in the guy that I'm actually looking forward to meeting him as much as I am bringing home the boat. I have a feeling that it'll be tough to leave his home since he plans to show me his sons boat, his hotrod and whatever else he is proud of. Hey, I hope that at age 68 I have a bunch of really cool stuff to pass on to someone who will appreciate it. I was offered a shower in the off chance that I can't find a hotel on Saturday night. Sometimes in life and business, you get to meet some really great people. I have never, never subjected myself to dealing with a-holes in life or business. I'm lucky and happy to report that I will NOT deal with them. I think it pays off to be a genuinely good person. I'm taking his exact asking price in cash with me.

I have bought more toys in the past 10 years than I care to recount. Why is this one so difficult? How is it that a 25 year old boat is messing with my head?

In short...I hope my instincts are right on this one.

I'm going to do my best with the glasses. I've seen three others of same year, make and model so I think I'll know what I'm looking at. I'm taking three different cameras.

I brought it home. It's been repainted where the color is so I think I'm safe to rename her. Floated her today and all is well, what a great boat. I'm happy.
