Im stumped...damn temp sender wires

Hello all

I know I posted about this before but I'm still stumped. The gauge doesn't read unless I hook up the solid brown and a wire clipped from the circle silver clip on temp sender both to the temp gauge. See Pic

I thought I just need the brown wire. Then when I bought the clip on temp sender(By Faria) the guy told me just run a clipped wire from the circle silver temp sender to the gauge.

Im totally stumped and feel abit stupid that I can't figure this out.

By the way can someone clarify on what each of these pics I am working with. Which is the sender and which is the switch ect.

This pic is the right cylinder bank looking from the engine in the back and has a brown with blue stripe wire.

This has something protruding in the cylinder head abit with a temp sender clipped to the bottom of it. The piece that protrudes into the cylinder head has a solid brown wire.

Thanks,
DamianJP

Look at all that rust and corrosion. No wonder it doesn't work.

Yes I see the rust and corrosion, thank you for your observation.

It does work but only when both of the wires and connected to the temp gauge. Not like either the installtion manual and the guy were I bought my temp sender said, they both said one wire runs to gauge .

Whats the thing that protrudes into head atop of the clip on sender?
Are they both temp senders?

Im thinking the other one with the Brown wire with blue stripes is the temp switch?

Thanks again.

Dave

Okay makes sense, because of the shape of the bolt in the picture right?

But why is there a sender in the head and a clip on one?

There was two old temps gauges so mabey the person before me wanted 2 diffrent readings of heat. Could this explain 2 diffrent sends, one in the head and one circle clip on one?

Now which one reads what type of temp and which one should I use?

Do you think if I clean all that ground up in the pic it should work fine with just one wire going to sender?

Sorry for being so blunt with the "thank you for your observation" comment. I should have realized that the sender runs off of resistance and that the ground would effect it. I thought mabey yeah the top of the bolt is just rusty but the ground is still connected and it should be fine. I was wrong I guess.

Thanks,

I'd replace the bolt and wire brush the ring connector or maybe replace that too and cut back the wire to grab fresh copper. You can use a ohmmeter to check continuity from the ring connector crimp to ground going to your gauges.
