but just in case.

Had to buy a new trolling battery today.

Last time out, after I got back I put the charger on, like always, then later on went out and shut it off. Left the clamps hooked up to the battery...for a week. Ding dong.

Not only drains, but drains completely. Will not take a charge again. Only good for the core on the new battery.

I have a good one, my mom takes my stepdads boat to do some crappie fishing, Somehow the bow mount trolling motor got turned on, foot pedal was sitting in a position just right to engage motor, only problem is she didnt know it was on. She found out after smoke was coming from the front, side and back of the boat......You guessed it, no inline fuses and she burned the wires up, Got so hot they caught on a small fire, everyone was ok, except the wallet for a new trolling motor.

Re: I'm sure nobody else is this dumb...

Could someone explain how this happens? I've always had a big boat with multiple batteries hooked up to charger, and I'm looking at a 3 battery charger for my new trolling motor. Is this only for non "fully automatic" chargers?

Lots of chargers won't drain the battery. I have a hard wired charger in my boat and I've had it off for 3 weeks at a time with no problem. Any permanent mount charger should be fine.

Thank goodness I got a "Dummy Proof" charger. "mine shuts off once the battery hits full charge :D :D otherwise I'd be replacing a few batteries myself...

I thought I had that problem cured with my new "Jim Dandy Super Dyno-Whopper Automatic Charger". But, it tripped the GFI sometime in the still of the night, and like bassman said...I had a good core for a new battery ....in stock!!!!

hello
wow I am not the only person to have the old charger killed battery. I have noted that quite a few chargers will have a small drain if hooked to the battery and unpluged. many onboard chargers will do thius. if the are not plugged in they become a drain.
good luck and keep charging
