Start with the 18hp, I have a suspicion if you try the 40hp on a 6.5' boat, you your boat and motor may end up on the bottom. IMHO

6and ahalf ft with 18 hp= Tub with a tornado strapped to the rear!! With 40 hp = Nice knowing you well your alive!!! :D Honest that 40 would be a lot of fun .. but I can imagine what the outcome would be. Lets do the math 16 years old x 6.50 ft X 40 hp    sounds like suicide run :( Unless you know what your doing , I dont know if you expereinced or not , Defently not for a beginner Iwould think!!

Since your going to use it in salt water you may want to use the Chrome pump kit p/n 0382474

sell the 40 and buy you a bigger boat. I didn't know they made boats that small, smallest I've seen is 8 foot, little portable things with two seats and mount for trolling motors.

Yea.... I'm still trying to visualize what 18 ponies will do on a 6.5 footer. oughta be screamer at the least

Read a bit of this thread, follow the links to the minimax page, and see what 9,8 HP can do on a 6' boat, close to 35 MPH as I remember, did Trackersoda.

18 HP seems WAY to big on a 6 foot boat to me and I don't think I'd EVER take a 6 foot boat in the ocean.

A 5HP or smaller seems like a better fit.

I bet you could sell the boat and motors and buy yourself a boat and motor that match better, and end up with a bigger, safer boat.

Just be careful.

I had an old waterlogged 14' MFG with an 18hp on it. The boat would plane with passengers and gear. I suspect your boat will come completely out of the water at 6.5'.

WEAR A LIFEJACKET. (a good one, not a 4.97 Wal-Mart one)

Re: im wondering how fast my boat can go with an 18 hp evinrude?

I'm actually going to bet that the boat won't get out of its own way with the 18 on it. A boat, any boat, needs a certain amount of planing surface just to get up on plane. A 6.5 ft. boat is TINY! Even the Sea Fleas and Mini Maxes were 8-feet long - that's a good 20% longer! Plus, they were flat bottom and quite wide (4-ft.). Even then they often required the drive to stretch out on the forward deck to get over the hump and get the boat on step. A 6.5 footer has that much less planing surface and is more like a displacement hull. I suspect the motor will strain its guts out trying to get the boat on step, but basically end up digging a hole in the water when all is said and done..
I'm not saying it couldn't be made to work in some fashion, but simply slapping the motor on the boat and going probably won't work.... At least not how you were hoping...

- Scott

Disneyworld has on its lakes a "watermouse". These boats are powered by I think 8 or 9Hp motors and do very well. They are also short, about 8 feet, and are 2 seaters. My wife at 130 lbs can get right up on plane. Me at 265, I lean forward until on plane, but do fine afterward.

You've got a bunch of great advice here mouseboat,

You seem to be a pretty smart 16 year old or you wouldn't be asking for advice. I'm not sure of the exact weight of that motor, but quessing in the neighborhood 90 lbs. add to that a tank of fuel. After sleeping on the situation, I have a feeling/hope that when you see where the water line is in relation to the top of the transom once you put the motor, fuel tank and that little boat in the water your probably going to rethink the whole idea before you ever step foot in it.
