I'm not sure of the exact weight of that motor, but quessing in the neighborhood 90 lbs. add to that a tank of fuel. After sleeping on the situation, I have a feeling/hope that when you see where the water line is in relation to the top of the transom once you put the motor, fuel tank and that little boat in the water your probably going to rethink the whole idea before you ever step foot in it.
You got that 100% right MCM . Whatever you decide to do Mouseboat , Remember safty first.

as i said to ferreriman. i had and 8' hydro w 1950 15hp. had to start put in gear and jump on what a ride then i would have to beach is to stop. pros wear life jackets and have kill switches. live long enough to get the water out of your engine. SAFETY FIRST and have a ball. two teenager asking advice, there might still be a future.

mouseboat,
Turn the boat over and look at the keel. If the keel is curved from front to back it is a DISPLACEMENT hull. These hulls DO NOT PLANE. A displacement hull this short will be overpowered with a 3 HP. A 3 HP will give you a thrilling ride because the bow will point at the sky and you won't be able to see where your going.
If you try the 18 out don't take anyone with you but make sure there is someone on shore with a cell phone to call for help.

Charlie

Cool, looks like it was built for speed, I think an 18hp might be pushin' it but if you add some bow weight (balast) to compensate for the lack of length and the weight of the motor it might be interesting to experiment with.

Just remember safety first like you and others have said.

cool boat mouseboat, looks fairly sturdy, but if it has been setting for several years check it completely for any rotted bracing below the fiberglass, like the transom. clean it up take it off the trailer and tilt it up and clean and wax the bottom. check the bearing in the trailer before you tow it. why have a wheel fall off before you get to the water. i recommend starting with the 18 until you get to know how the boat(hull) handles on the water. how it takes waves head on, at an angle, or sideways. how tight a turn you can take all that stuff. let it teach you what it can do before you ask it to do more. good luck. keep us posted. after looking at picture some more i suggest you put something for a wheel fender, why throw a rock thru the hull? a piece of plywood bolted to the frame is better than nothing.

Now that boat looks like it could be fun and should be plenty fast with an 18. Just check it out like they said earlier, to be sure the transom and stringers are in good shape. Please be vrey careful, a small boat with lots HP can get away from you very fast.

im going to bolt on some aircraft grade stainless steel for wheel wells. i made an account on photobucket, if you all want to see some more pics of it. im goin to paint it a dark lime green with red, copper metallic, and blue metallic sripes. i got the paint from my autobody teacher. its all he had. paint is expensive!!!! before i got the boat it wes rigged and used as a haul cleaner in mission and san diego bay. here is my photobucket url, http://photobucket.com/albums/e197/trevencath/. my 18 has 2 exaust ports, one is above and the other is below the water. now my question is is when the engine is running will water come out the upper exauste port when the Tstat is open and closed? because if it does then there is no reason for adding a telltale pipe, right?
