Just picked up two new antiques today.

One is an older HD-20 model 2 1/2hp Johnson. Complete, with lower shroud and starter rope assembly. No sea mist green. Just silver. It looks pretty straight and the tank isn't all beat up. It looks like it's very restorable. All it looks like I need to buy for it, is the shut off valve for the fuel tank. Anyone have one they could sell me? This motor turns over, but no spark. Most likely dirty points or dead consensors. I'm more willing to believe the dirty points though, after all, it is a Johnson. I'll post more info on it, in the next day or so. I think I'm going to like playing with this one.

The other is of course an old 5hp TD. Complete, spins over and has the lower shroud and starter assembly. This one looks like it'll take about the same amount of effort to get running. These old motors are still very common. Holy gads, I can't believe how many I have seen over the years. They must have sold millions of them

good finds.im going to go check out a very old mercury wizard 6hp later ,might be the first merc in the stable for a long long time.still love the looks of my 1939 22.5 evinrude,so homely its pretty!

Well, today, I cleaned up the old HD-20 and removed about a pound of grease and oil. It looks as though something was setting next to it and dripping oil all over it. That could be what helped preserve it.
I pulled the lower unit off of it and everything turned nice and freely. The powerhead spins over nice too. So far, from what I can see, the ignition system needs work. The coils look to be in great condition though. I'm going to replace the condensors and spark plug wires and see where that takes it. I figure that if I can get this little bugger to run after that, then it'll be a pretty inexpensive revival. If I find that it runs good, then I'll strip it all down and give it a new paint job. I found paint and decals at nymarine for that motor, so it'll be good. Amazingly enough, the gas tank only has one small dent in it and it does not look bad.

Just an update. I finally decided to pull the old HD-20 down and look inside. First I did a compression test and got 60 psi per hole, which is pretty darned good on only 1 3/8" bore. LOL I decided to pull it apart anyhow, so I could see how it looked inside. It's a good thing I did, because I found some rust damage on #2 rod journal and #2 piston looked like it was pretty well worn. Amazing that I got as good compression as I did. I broke only one head bolt (screw) getting the head off, but I drilled it out and everything went really well with it. No damage to the threads. It looks like I do want to get a replacement crank for it and at least a good rod and piston to replace #2 The #1 piston and rod looks pretty good and the crank journals in the block look like they never even seen any wear. I attached some photos of the block. Pretty funny seeing an engine block only 5 1/4" tall. It kinda makes the JW's look colossal.

Well, today I ordered the new parts for the powerhead on this booger. New crank, pistons, rings and rods. Plus I bought two new condensors for it. Amazingly enough, Sea-Way Marine had all this stuff in stock. I was pretty shocked that they had everything for a motor that is 70 years old but what was really odd, was the crank is cheaper than each of the rods. The crank was under $59 and each rod was $65. So now this little gem is going to have all new innards in the block for just under $350.

I see that vintage outboard has their site back up, so now I can order a new water pump too.

Why dont you make some kind manual how you rebuilt this motor.just step by step.
i think it will be wery helpful, for people just round the world.if you are skiled in old outboard so shere you knowlege with this oldi with others.
i put apart 4.5hp evin 1980, but before i didnt do any work like this.for me its inposible to get a manual, so i'm working by my own steps and with people from here.

Yea, the HD-25 from what I found, is the continuation of the earlier HD-20. The only difference that I have seen, is the color. The powerhead will be basically all new, by the time I get done with it. Not quite as new as your '57 Lark, but close. My engine block and crank journals are in great shape, so I'm good there.

Hey raczekp1, you should be able to find manuals all over Ebay for your motor. A lot of sellers will ship world wide if you ask them. However, I will keep everyone posted here on my progress, because once I get the powerhead done, then I'm starting on the rest of the motor.

Well, I got all my parts that I had ordered yesterday and everything arrived in great shape. It's amazing how tiny these little pistons and rings are. LOL It looks like I'll have to use my old wrist pins, because the new pistons didn't include them, which I thought was kinda odd. Oh well, mine are still in fine shape and should be okay. I'll post some more pics when I start puting it back together. I have more cleaning to do on the block first.
