Four firefighters rescuing drunk pedal boater fall into frigid waters

BARRIE, Ont. - Police say four firefighters rescuing an impaired teen in a pedal boat on Lake Simcoe had to be pulled out of frigid waters themselves after a wave swamped their boat. Full Story

This guy wins my "Jackass of the Day" award! Not only did he endanger his own life but the life of 4 others. I think they should check for his "Pleasure Craft Operator Card" and PFD violations too!

Booze and boating should never mix. The guy is lucky nobody was hurt or killed.

I think that those who need rescue from the consequences of their own gross or willful negligence should bear the cost of their rescue. This one would include one boat, the ER costs for checking out four firemen, and the cost of running the second rescue.

It MIGHT slow down some of the stupidity! Probably not, but it would make some of us feel better and help keep taxes lower.;)

In many places, S&R will bill you. I know that here in Tennessee, if you need rescuing from a cave, you will get billed.

is there a story there about why you know? just wondering. or is it just the fact of too many amateur spelunkers who suddenly realize they should not leave the surface?

Yeah , but I ain't sending the bill , even if I may be 1 of the rescuers .
I'll settle for a case of brew later , however . ;)

Most cave rescues , like most every other type , are the result of untrained/uncaring novices getting in WAY over thier heads , no pun intended .
Boating rescues are easy , by comparison .
A disabled "spelunker" may as well be on the moon , in a lot of scenarios .
Extraction can be that difficult .

I do know of several caves where a pedal boat in the cave accident is feasible , lol .

I know of a couple actual rescues caused by the capsizing of canoes , causing the would-be explorers' COLEMAN LANTERN(ONLY LIGHT SOURCE, VERY STUPID..) to be extinguished .

Re: Impaired operation of pedal boat

This Saturday I was on Lake Michigan and was tuned in to Ch.16 at the moment when I heard USCG announce that there was an "unmanned pedal boat that was found in Lake Macatawa....something..something.....should assist if possible". I'm not sure if they found anyone and I haven't seen anything in the news about it. This was at about 9am and I was about 50 miles north from Lake Macatawa. Probably some drunk that fell off the boat.
