Impeller assembly

After correcting some different things done by the PO, I want to make sure I have put the impeller back together the right way. How exactly does everything go back together. The PO had it put back together in a manner where I had to remove the shaft to get the old impeller off. The way it was, the pin on the shaft sat in the impeller instead of the impeller sitting on top of the pin. From the pictures in the SELOC manual, the impeller sits on the pin instead of the pin sitting on the impeller. Does the impeller sit in the housing in a way where the slot is facing up or down. If it sits in the housing with the slot facing down, how do I remove the brass retainer at the top if the shaft.

I put it back together the way the PO had it, it pumped water, but I just want to make sure I am putting everything together right.

I assume you are working on your 1988 50HP motor?

Not 100% sure because I've never changed the impeller on a 50HP motor, but I would think that the slot on the impeller would be facing down. Sounds like maybe something isn't assembled correctly, Maybe someone else can chime it. Doesn't make sense to have to remove the drive shaft to change the impeller. Is that what you're talking about when you say you have to remove the shaft to change the impeller?

The retainer on the very top of the shaft that keeps the rubber boot from sliding down should slip off.....unless it's corroded in place. A little heat, some WD-40 or similar rust/corrosion breaking fluid and gentle persuasion with a small hammer should do the trick.

Yes it is on my 88 50hp and I am referring to the drive shaft, I had to pull the drive shaft out to get the impeller off.

The retainer at the top is slid on and should slide off crescent wrench opened
to the size of the shaft and a quick move up the shaft will send it flying.
Its supposed to have a rubber grommet and grease to lube the splines.

Sounds like he(PO) couldn't get it off either and assembled it the only way he could.

The impeller slides on from the top.
The "pin" should be a solid pin and just inserted in the shaft.
It should be a tight fit.
Post a pic of the impeller, both sides and the groove.
