Hey everyone,

I just finished changing the impeller on my 1968 mercury 650. Everything went together real well. I read that when I take the lower unit off it doesn't matter what gear its in as long as when I put it back together it is in reverse. I did that and now the prop runs in forward gear whether the controls are in reverse neutral or forward. Did I miss something? Any help would be appreciated, its the 4 cyl merc.

Re: impeller change

I don't know where you read that info but here's how it's done: Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it
stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a
few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this
should be neutral - check by turning propshaft --
do not shift into reverse unless you turn the propshaft at the same time.
If it is in N go ahead and attach LU to driveshaft housing with control in N.

Wow, don't know where you read that, but it's definitely not right. When I put the gear housing back on I prefer to do it with the box and the controls both in neutral. The main reason it because in both forward and reverse the shift shaft can still rotate to other places with the box dropping out of gear. In neutral the shift shaft can only be in one place. And if the control is also in neutral, it's a 'no-brainer'. If the splines don't quite line up, just give the flywheel a bit of a turn...

Re: impeller change

Don't mean to sound stupid but is the shift shaft the small splined shaft with the plastic coupler type things?
