I am trying to change me impeller on my merc. I can not seem to get the impeller of the shaft where it sits. Is there any tricks? Can i heat that up a little and try? I am trying to pry up on it with a screwdriver but all i am doing is ripping the old impeller. Thanks again
Mike

Re: impeller froze

soak it in liquid wrench, break free, or other similar product for 4 to 6 hours.....
Use a brass hammer and apply some pressure to the bottom of the impeller,,,gently but solidily rap on the shaft with the brass hammer (use brass anything else will muchroom the shaft...
This shoudl break it free..
If not heat may be you next move...but heat warps things....I try to stay away from heat if at all possible,

Split the bronze hub with a cold chisel if you can't free it up.

Re: impeller froze

I had one stuck on a little 6hp. I soaked for 2 days with pb blaster and then put a box end wrench down the shaft to the impeller and tapped the wrench with the hammer. Worked like a charm.

Re: impeller froze

Ok, I got my water pump impeller kit in today from iboats Kit # 18-3507. It is for a 1964 mercury 50hp 4 cyl. I went to put it together and noticed 2 things. 1 Is the new top base suppost to be plastic not metal like my old one? 2. My old top base has a rubber seal inside the whole where the shft slides threw for a tight fit around the shaft the new kit did not come with one? Is this suppost to be like that or am i missing a piece of the kit. Thanks for the advice
Mike

Re: impeller froze

I recently did the impeller on my 1985 Merc 50 and came across the same thing. The plastic upper housing had an o ring and metal cap that went over the output shaft, and then the slinger sat on top of this. Parts guy at the marina couldn't find it anywhere. Showed it to his tech who told me to throw away the old o-ring and metal cap, Merc hasn't used them in years. Makes sense, it was hardly a snug fit, was told to just slide the slinger down on top of the water pump. Haven't started up the motor yet.
