My 88 2.3L Cobra isnt cooling sufficently at slow speeds or idle(above 180)High speeds drop down to 160. We took the impeller off and there is some flat spots on each blade, but there is still a "lip" on the worn side. We took it to a marine shop and the guy said it had about 80% of its wear left and said that was not our problem. But our manual says there shouldn't be any flat spots at all. What are your opinions i will try and take some pics. Thanks. Also the thermostat is operating properly.

Hi stub....you also have to look at the impeller blades and see if they freely spring back straight and do they stay in a curved position. Is the rubber still "soft" or feel like it's getting hard? Anyway you look at it, if ya' got the old one out, then replace it. It's small pennies compared to an overhaul.

When I take the impellar out the blades have a little curve to them. The will bounce back but they will not stand straight up. The rubber is still soft.

if you have gone to the trouble of breaking down the drive, then by all means, replace the impeller, it is not that expensive and you are assured that it is not the problem.

put a new one in. if it works throw the old one away. if it doesn't work keep the old one as a spare. and a new gasket. they are cheap. spares are good. low rpm overheat weak pump, high rpm restriction in cooling system. general rules.
