Impeller housing.

Good day Gentlemen.
Im having trouble sourcing a new seal(part no.305306) for the impeller housing on my 1963 bigtwin model no 40402S. Im still not sure if I should just replace the seal or it would be better to replace the whole housing (part no 305096).
Any advice from the "Gods of the floating things" would, as always, be much appreciated. Maybe someone could suggest a source for the seal or a new housing, which I would assume would come complete with seal etc.

Regards
Tich

That part is replaceable by Sierra Marine 18-2027, which you may be able to fine more easily.

Thanks CAT!
When you say "that part" do you mean the seal or the housing itself?

The pump housing on that engine was aluminum. It is probably long over due for replacement. I would replace the entire pump assembly.

That's just the seal. I'm not sure about the housing's availablity. I've not checked.

I just checked the part number you have for the housing. I think you have the wrong number. That one comes up as a bracket of some kind. I don't have the number for the pump housing, I'm afraid.

OK. You can buy a complete water pump service kit, including the housing, impeller, seal, etc, as part number 379775. You should be able to source that in the UK, but it's also available at online sources for Johnson/Evinrude parts. That unit fits several years of big twins, starting with the upgraded 1958 models, and yours.

Nothing! Not even a dribble!
Before I take the lower unit off to check the pump again is there any other reason why I still have no water coming from either the idle relief or the main outlet. I have checked the thermostat and that seems to be ok. Logic tells me that it must be a problem with the pump itself. Am I right or am I over looking something? CATrans,if your out there I need your help yet again Sir. Or anyone, that has had similar problems.
Regards
Tich

Re: Impeller housing.

Are you sure you got the woodruff key in the impeller properly?

When you have the lower unit off, try blowing air through the water tubes. There could be some crud in them. I hope not, but that's another test.

Also, you can pull the thermostat cover off, remove the thermostat, and start the engine up briefly. Water should come out of the top of the engine at a pretty good pace.

A couple other ideas - make sure the water inlet passage through the lower unit is clear as well. Also, were you testing in enough water? The level ought to be up over the pump.

tich
Scroll down to "no water - lengthy"
I also have no water and am hoping the blown head gasket will fix my snafu! Won't know 'til this weekend tho as my head gasket won't be in 'til Friday. Let me know if you have any other solution as that's all I have left to go on.
