Hey guys

Was installing a new impeller in my outboard today. Which is a 75hp merc 2 stroke 1997.

Took the gearbox off, the the impeller housing, i noticed there was no key, [which is used to lock the impeller to the shaft]

It pumped water ok before.

Do i need a new key ?

Re: Impeller installation

Every impeller i've replaced needed a key whether the key was attached to the shaft or it was the slip in type key.
The key probably fell out and you didn't notice it.
You can get a new key at any boat repair facility.
You will need it.

Re: Impeller installation

Definitely need a key to make sure the impeller rotates with the shaft. As was mentioned, it must have fallen out when you removed the impeller.

Key per Mercury p/n 43037 (very inexpensive)

Normally available at iBoats megamall here: p/n 28-43037 but they currently show 'out of stock'. Just about any marine shop should have it, as it it used on a lot of lower units, including stern drives.
