Does anyone know how you could lose the impeller key/pin while operating the motor? I have a 8 HP kicker and when I ran it at home to test it out it pee'd fine. Took it out the other day, started it up and within 10 to 15 seconds it stopped peeing. I took it apart and the impeller looks fine, but the impeller key/pin is missing.

Thanks,

sounds like the key was never installed and the friction was enoght for running on muffs. any chance it fell out while being installed or is laying next to the 6th empty beer can. i found that on 10 cans you can put the float in a carb upside down so anything is possible

It usually takes me about 15 cans to screw up. Experience talking. LOL.

Yeah, not sure...impeller was installed by previous owner. When I ran it, I ran it in a 55 gal trash can. Pee'd fine, but as soon as I put it in the salt water at the dock, it quit within 10 seconds. WHen I took it apart, I ran water through all the lines and nothing seemed to be blocked. Oh well, will rebuild the water pump and see how it goes. If it doesn't work, I'll probably just part out the motor and buy a new one with what ever I make as a down payment. Unless I can find a cheap lower unit.

Re: Impeller Key/Pin

Can anyone tell me what the key/pin looks like on a 1986 Evinrude 8 HP? Looking at the picture of the pin on ebay of the kit I bought, does not seem to match the spot on the drive shaft where the impeller sits. Looks like a 1/4 inch notch on the shaft with only a smallish slot on the impeller.

water pumps are that hard, kit should have all pieces nessasry. as long as missing key is in any water passage i wouyldn't worry about. drink beer while doing a job that new to you is never a good idea. I have a hard enough time remembering **** when im sober.besides drinking is more fun when the job is done and done right

Re: Impeller Key/Pin

SO I got the impeller put back together but I think I might need the outside water pump housing. I notced that the metal cup holding the impeller sits insde the pump housing in a certain position. The old one had slipped to the left a little blocking the hole where the water escapes into the water lines of the motor. I had to use my drimmel a little to reform the plastice grove for the new one to sit flat but I think the plastic was too damaged so that might have been part of the cause.

Anyone know the part number for the water pump housing?

Thanks,

Re: Impeller Key/Pin

Got impatient and just bought another kit that includes the pump housing. At least I'll have spares.
