i have a 1975 johnson 85 hp outboard. it hasnt run in who know how many years, i plan on changing the impeller but should i go ahead and redo the entire water pump? and also would it be advisable to rebuild the fuel pump and carbs? i think i answered my own question but thought i would ask the opinion of people more knowledgable than myself for i am a noobie to the boating scene and want to make my old boat safe and reliable. thanx in advance for the input gentlemen and ladies.

i just got a water pump rebuild kit when i brought mine back to life. didn't seem like it was much more and it was super easy to do, so since you're in there, i'd get a rebuild kit.

i don't think i'd worry much about the fuel pump, but it couldn't hurt to do it.

but DEFF. rebuild the carbs if its been sitting for a length of time, those carbs need to be in tip top shape b/c they don't only fuel the engine, they lubricate it too!

trust me, i didn't do the carbs on mine, i just drained the fuel outta the bowls and ran some fresh fuel through them, wasn't enough b/c i blew it up due to a lean burn situation...

good luck, n keep up posted!

Your engine was manufactured before ethanol blended fuel was mandated but regardless, an engine that old needs to have the carbs rebuilt. Kits are cheap when compared with an engine rebuild after a blow up because the engine ran lean due to clogged carbs. The new kits will also contain soft parts that are ethanol tolerant. While you are in there, replace the fuel lines (tank to carbs) with the modern versions. As for the water pump, you make the entire pump or just the impeller decision when you get it apart. If the pump housing is scored, cracked, pitted, or otherwise damaged, replace the entire pump. If the housing looks good just an impeller swap is all that's needed. Replacing or rebuilding the fuel pump is also a good idea. Fill up with a fresh 50:1 mixture of fuel and oil mix and then enjoy the engine.
