Re: Impeller replaced, now no water pumped!

I think I may have found the problem. Another $50.00 kit should answer the riddle. Gotta go pick it up.

Yes, I heard about the dishsoap as a lubricant for the impeller from the dealer I bought the kit from. Worked well. The soap will rinse off once the impeller sees water (a clue).
Stay tuned. I'll chime in once its back together later this afternoon. I'm feeling like an idiot at the moment.

Yeah it sounds like he didnt want to say this ... but he decided to add it anyhow !

sounds like we are going to hear the whole story once he returns !

Re: Impeller replaced, now no water pumped!

Well, I'm up and running again! I started the morning by checking water flow to the engine on the line that goes to the thermostat...nothing.

This meant that the issue had to be in the water pump drive. I removed the lower drive and turned on the water to the muffs. No water was coming up to the impeller! Turns out that I had a kink in the water hose going to the muffs! The internal cavity in the lower drive unit would not fill up to the impeller since it leaked out on the other side of the muff.

After realizing my stupidity I rushed out to buy another kit and had it installed in an hour...worked perfectly this time with the kink in the water hose fixed.

I'm chalking this off as a learning experience. I've never worked on a boat before and therefore never used muffs either. This is my first boat and I've only had it for a week. I've learned a lot in the past week already.

While the engine was warm I decided to work on some items I'm more familiar with. I changed the oil and dialed in the ignition timing.

I'm still uncertain why I had one impeller blade bent back the wrong way. This had me heading down the wrong track. May have happened during the impeller installation or I ratated the driveshaft counterclockwise during the drive installation.

To anyone debating doing this procedure, yes, a newbie mistake cost me more money. But I'm still way ahead than if I had paid someone else to do everything that I accomplished today.

When you are learning you either have to pay someone to teach you or you learn by your own costly mistakes sometimes.

Tomorrow is play day!

Yea! Well done! I hope I don't have to get a little extra practice. Mine is done but not back on the boat yet. Definitely off the dining room table though!

Did you have a little orange rubber washer left over? I have no idea what this goes to. The two yellows will go on the drain/full plugs but I am at a loss as to the orange one.

Intune, the small orange o-ring is probably the quad seal. It seals the oil passage between the upper and lower parts of the outdrive. Important that it is in place. The old one may still be in place and seal the joint OK but I would pull it apart and put in the new one. Good luck.

How little is this booger?
Is it possible that it is the oil gasket ring that goes on the starboard side of the lower end, on the flat top section, it is the oil passage between the upper and lower..

Just a thought..

Just another helpful hint... I installed a cheap plastic shut off valve on the hose input to my muffs. This allows you to test the water flow before hooking up the muffs and keeps you from doing the 50 yrd dash to the house every time you want to turn the water on or off.

I thought of installing a shut off valve like you mentioned when I realized how much water I was using.

It would be even more helpful to install it about 6 feet away from the muffs and hang the valve off the side of the boat. That way you could turn the water off from inside the boat when you are working on the engine to keep from jumping in and out.

As far as the parts in the Gen II replacement kit, the only orange seals are the two o-rings for the water pump pipe and the smaller quad seal for the oil passage. You should not have any parts remaining.

yes and if you do it like mine , I just have a 25 ext hose made up for "muffin"with the valve about 10 ft from the muffs you can drag the valve right up into the boat and dont need to climb in and out.
