Just replaced impeller on '93 135 black max. Pulled out of garage on a 35 degree day. Hooked garden hose to flush muffs. Ran about 90 seconds with no discharge from witness hole and temp gauge did not move. I shut it off. Thoughts?

90 seonds is probably not enough time for it to prime and get all the air out of the system. Let it run several minutes. You did put the key back in the shaft, right?

Thanks for your response. Key is in; replaced gaskets and housing as well. My thought was I didn't get the water tube lined up with the housing. Kit came with new tube but the old one didn't come down with the housing, so I left in place. I thought the temp gauge would show something after the run time I gave it. We'll put in the water and try again. Thanks!

The plastic extension tube must be put in the pump housing, to line up the water tube, unless you have really really long, thin fingers....

Although it takes the thermostats to open before you have a telltale, and this may never happen on the flusher in cold weather, water should emerge from the gratings above the prop and thru the prop itself. Water discharge should happen in a minute or two max.

Thanks for your reply. If the the tube is in the housing when replacing, how does it line up with where it connects up inside?

You should be able to manipulate the gearcase and move the plastic tube over the copper tube. Once you have got the copper tube in the plastic one, which is still in the water pump cover, you can push the gearcase into position and wiggle it home.

Remember you need to grease and align the driveshaft and shift shaft splines. I use a mercury lifting eye in the flywheel, so I can turn it with a screwdriver, breaker bar or socket handle. You can use a needle nose plier to align the shift shafts. Gearcase and motor are best reassembled when in neutral.

Do not use the nuts to pull the gearcase into position. use fingers to tighten the nuts as you wiggle the gearcase home.

Are you sure the pee hole is not connected to the thermostats? Some models of Merc Require the thermostats to open to pee. Also on muffs should take far less than 90 seconds to bleed out the air.

On the OP's motor, the thermostats need to open before a telltale can occur. In cold weather, with a flusher device, it may not ever open at idle speed.

You need to look at the gratings above the Anti ventilation plate and the prop hub for water to emerge.

Thanks to all for the info. I finally did what should have been at the start, call Mercury Marine help line(929-929-5040) and learned two important things; seal between impeller housing and plastic tube (pn # 38970) is not included in the complete? rebuild kit and must be ordered separately; on this engine, the tell-tail will not pee until thermostat opens at 143°. Going to drop unit and install seal, and will update. Thanks again.

The seal in the water pump output? They come with some of the impeller rebuild kits. I am not sure I ever actually replaced one directly, as they come installed in new pump covers.

Watching the DIY videos, I made sure the parts kit contained everything I saw used. I watched videos where the long screw wasn't installed in the housing; wher the large round seal wasn't slid down the driveshaft to atop the housing. I didn't see one video where the mentioned seal was installed. The kit has several parts I didn't use, I suppose they're for other units. To correct myself, Mercury Marine does include pn#38970 in their complete kit. If in doubt, call the Pros!
