I did my '86 140 last year....same motor, different carbs.<br /><br />I left mine in neutral, although I don't really think it makes a difference as long as you leave it in the same gear through the entire process. <br /><br />The only tough part of the whole deal is accessing the shift shaft linkage under the carbs. I found the easiest way to do this was to remove the lower cowling from the engine. Trying to squeeze your hands and/or tools in there without doing this is pretty tough. Only a few bolts to remove to get the cowling off, so well worth the effort.<br /><br />Make sure that you don't adjust (turn) the shift shaft once you get the lower unit out. It has to be set at the correct height in order the motor to shift properly. Turning the shaft will either increase or decrease the length of it and cause you grief.<br /><br />Oh yeah, make sure you have someone around to help you manhandle the lower unit when removing/reinstalling. Trying to hold it while aligning things and tightening/loosing bolts is pretty tough. Pretty awkward and heavy piece of machinery.<br /><br />Good luck.<br /><br />Cheers,<br /><br />Brew
