Hello,

I am going to attempt to replace my impeller by myself. I have an outboard 77 merc 1500 and did a search online at mercruiserparts. I have a few questions,

do I need to replace anything else on the shaft besides the impeller?
I am pretty good at fixing things but is it difficult to do?
are there any special tools required?

below is a list of parts that are on the shaft which holds the impeller they are in order of bottom of the shaft to the top. please letrme know if I should replace any of them as well

-bottom of shaft-
gasket
o ring
oil seal
oil seal
base assy
pin-dowel
gasket
faceplate
gasket
key drive
impeller
insert
body assy-wp
washer
lockwasher
screw
washer
nut
seal
sleeve
-top of shaft-

thanks

make sure when you take the old impeller off you dont loose the
key that lock it onto the drive shaft. i made this mistake the first time i dont it but lucky enough the key fell inside the gear casing and i was able to retrieve.

As a result the impeller wont spin so no water will be pumped. Other than that its pretty straught forward, few spanners and a socket set and you should be able to manage it.

mercuryman,u can get a manual from basspro, west marine or any reputable marine dealer in your area...two publishers are either clymer or sealock...lots of illustrations and diagrams to work with...gaskets are a must to replace, also take a hard look at the housings,,,depends just how "hot" it was ran..if the material looks melted on the outside it probably needs replacing///any questions u have i'm sure someone here can help ya....good luck
